A new wave of technological integration is sweeping through accounting and bookkeeping practices across Australia, as many firms embrace artificial intelligence (AI) not only to streamline operations but also to stimulate growth without increasing staff. Research from Xero, a leading global platform for small businesses, reveals that 35% of accounting firms report being able to maintain or expand their output without adding to their workforce thanks to the efficiencies brought about by AI.
This groundbreaking survey, which covered over 500 senior accountants and bookkeepers, highlighted a crucial misconception: While many fear that AI may lead to job reductions, 88% of firms expect AI will not affect team sizes over the next year. Instead, 38% anticipate a reorganization of roles tailored to take advantage of new AI capabilities.
According to Charlie Sheppeard, Xero’s EGM Strategy & Operations for Australia and New Zealand, “Accounting is regularly named among the professions most exposed to AI disruption. Our data shows practices that are making deliberate choices about where AI fits, how their people use it, and how they price the value they create are seeing the strongest growth.” This suggests that strategic adoption of AI can lead to positive developments rather than detrimental downsizing.
Among the firms leading this charge are those that have integrated AI deeply into their daily workflows. The most profitable practices generate 2.8 times more revenue than lower-margin firms and benefit significantly from AI, which reportedly saves top firms an average of 11 hours per week—compared to 8 hours for all firms—equating to annual savings of $244,000 versus $160,000. These top contenders have redirected that time savings into providing more advisory services and adopting innovative pricing models that align more closely with client value.
While only 52% of accountants currently employ AI in their regular operations, this figure jumps to 69% among the highest-performing firms. The key differentiator appears to be the extent of AI’s usage rather than its mere adoption. Moreover, practices utilizing AI tend to maintain more structured workflows; 94% of them rate their core business processes as well-documented, contrasting sharply with the 40% of firms that do not engage with AI.
The implications for small business owners are significant. By embracing AI, firms can streamline processes, automate routine tasks, and free up resources for higher-value work such as advisory services and client support. Notably, the data illustrates that 44% of firms plan to allocate AI-derived efficiencies towards advisory work, while others focus on innovation (40%), training (39%), and business development (36%).
Nevertheless, while these opportunities are enticing, small business owners should also consider potential challenges. Successfully implementing AI requires investment in training and a cultural shift within the firm. As Andrew Erkins, founder of Digit, a bookkeeping and advisory firm, states: “The real question isn’t about getting replaced; it’s what our role will become. That means embracing AI and supporting our teams and clients on how to use it.” Therefore, fostering a supportive environment where teams can adapt and understand AI tools is essential for maximizing their benefits.
The advent of AI is transforming the landscape of accounting and bookkeeping. With over half of the surveyed firms now offering advisory services—many reporting revenue boosts of over 30% from these offerings—there’s a clear opportunity for firms to transition from traditional hourly billing methods to value-based pricing models. In fact, 43% of firms utilizing value-based pricing indicate improved profitability alongside the confidence to charge 34% more for advisory services than their lower-margin counterparts.
The findings from Xero have been compiled in their Modern Practice Playbook, which aims to provide firms of all sizes with insights and strategies tailored for sustainable growth. The full report, available for download, includes a combination of research, case studies, and practical advice, empowering firms to adopt these critical insights into their practices.
As AI continues to evolve, small business owners would do well to keep an eye on these developments, explore how similar strategies can be applied in their own operations, and create an agile environment that embraces technology while supporting their teams. The move towards AI integration starts with a mindset shift, opening doors to expanded capabilities and enhanced service offerings, which can redefine success in the competitive landscape of accounting and bookkeeping.
