Elon Musk has announced plans to give every child in the United States one share of SpaceX next year, raising questions about when the giveaway will begin, who will qualify and how the shares will reach millions of children.
Musk made the announcement on X on October 19, writing, “We will give one share of SpaceX to every child in the US next year.” He described the proposal as the first of many plans.
When will Elon Musk give away SpaceX shares to children?
Musk has said the giveaway will take place next year, meaning 2027, but has not announced a specific date or month.
His post does not clarify whether the shares will be distributed in one phase or in stages. It also does not explain when the company will publish the rules or open any registration process.
Any date for applications or distribution would be speculative until Musk or SpaceX provides further information.
Who will qualify for one SpaceX share?
Musk's announcement refers to every child in the US, but does not define who will be eligible.
It remains unclear whether the programme will cover only US citizens or also children who live in the country without citizenship. The post also does not specify an age limit, whether newborns will qualify or how the company will handle children who turn 18 during 2027.
SpaceX has not explained whether families will need to submit documents, use an online portal or complete any other formalities to establish a child's eligibility.
How will SpaceX distribute shares to children?
One question is whether SpaceX shares would be placed directly in a child's name or held through a parent or legal guardian until the child reaches a specified age. Musk has not announced any such arrangement.
The company has also not explained whether recipients would be able to transfer or sell their shares, or whether restrictions would apply. The terms of the proposed giveaway would determine what ownership means in practice.
How much will one SpaceX share be worth?
The worth of a SpaceX share would depend on the company's valuation and the terms attached to the particular share being distributed. The post does not specify the share class, the valuation to be used or whether recipients would receive shares carrying the same rights as other shareholders.
Musk calls the giveaway the first of many plans
Musk's statement described the proposed distribution as the first of many plans, suggesting he intends to announce further initiatives. However, he did not identify the other plans or provide a timetable for additional announcements.
The latest SpaceX proposal comes days after Tesla demonstrated its redesigned Roadster at a SpaceX facility in Texas. During the October 15 demonstration, the car was shown performing unusual manoeuvres, including driving upside down on a ramp and using SpaceX-linked thruster technology for an airborne movement.
Tesla has said production of the next-generation Roadster is expected to begin in 2028. The vehicle demonstration and the proposed share giveaway concern separate projects, and Musk has not said they are connected.
Musk has promised one SpaceX share to every child in the US in 2027, but a distribution date, eligibility rules, the process for receiving shares and their potential value are yet to be announced.
