Sierra Leone’s rising table tennis star Naomi Coker has recorded an impressive victory at the 2026 ITTF Africa Senior Championships in Tangier, Morocco, defeating Madagascar’s experienced player Hanitra Raharimanana 3–1 in the Women’s Singles group stage.
The 17-year-old Sierra Leonean, who entered the continental competition through a wildcard invitation, delivered a strong performance against one of Africa’s established table tennis players.
The victory, reported on Saturday, October 24, 2026, marks another significant achievement for the young athlete as she continues to establish herself on the continental stage.
Competing against a more experienced opponent, Coker demonstrated determination and competitive ability to secure a four-game victory over Raharimanana.
The result is particularly notable given the Malagasy player’s experience in major international competitions.
As of February 2026, Raharimanana was reportedly ranked sixth in Africa and 145th in the world, highlighting the level of opposition Coker faced.
The Madagascar international has also competed in prestigious international table tennis events, including the Singapore Smash.
Her experience extends to doubles competition, having been part of Madagascar’s women’s doubles team that reached the quarterfinals of the championships in Tangier.
Despite the difference in experience, Coker emerged victorious, strengthening her reputation as one of Sierra Leone’s promising young table tennis talents.
Coker’s participation in the African Senior Championships follows a breakthrough period in her sporting career.
Earlier in 2026, the young athlete made history in Accra, Ghana, by winning a bronze medal at the Youth Cup, reportedly becoming the first Sierra Leonean player to secure a continental medal in table tennis.
That achievement earned her a wildcard entry into the senior continental championships, providing an opportunity to compete against some of Africa’s leading players.
Her latest victory represents further progress in her transition from youth competitions to senior-level international table tennis.
For a 17-year-old competing against established senior athletes, the result offers an encouraging indication of her development and potential.
Coker’s performance is another positive development for Sierra Leonean table tennis, a sport that receives considerably less public attention than football in the country.
Her success demonstrates the potential of young Sierra Leonean athletes to compete internationally when provided with opportunities to develop their skills and gain competitive experience.
The victory could also encourage greater interest in table tennis among young people and strengthen calls for continued investment in sports development.
Coker’s progress from winning a historic youth medal to defeating an experienced senior opponent highlights the importance of nurturing emerging talent and creating pathways to international competition.
The 2026 ITTF Africa Senior Championships, taking place at the Arena Olympic Hall in Tangier from October 18 to 25, bring together leading table tennis players from across the continent.
The competition features several categories, including men’s and women’s singles, doubles and team events.
Coker’s victory in the Women’s Singles group stage strengthens her campaign as she seeks to make further progress in the tournament.
Her eventual qualification position and subsequent fixtures will depend on the remaining group results and the competition format.
Regardless of how far she progresses, the victory over Raharimanana represents an important milestone in her developing career.
For Sierra Leone, Naomi Coker’s continued progress offers renewed optimism about the future of table tennis and the country’s ability to produce athletes capable of competing at the highest levels of African sport.
