Shillong, Oct 17: Former chief secretary PBO Warjri on Saturday joined residents of Laban Pyllun in their protest against the Shillong Ropeway project, saying development cannot come at the cost of destroying existing natural wealth.
Warjri joined the rally organized by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against Shillong Ropeway.
Speaking on the sidelines, Warjri lauded the residents for standing up for the community.
“They have come here for the whole community, for society. They have come because they have passion for something more than wealth. This itself is wealth, this is development. Development is not only construction. Preserving what we already have, preserving our wealth, that is development. We cannot destroy what we already have,” he said.
On his motivation to join the protest, Warjri said, “I have always had tremendous love for the environment, for forests, for rivers and streams. I love nature because I know it is valuable. It is valuable for us, it is the source of everything, it is a source of wealth.”
He cautioned against destroying the ecological foundation of Shillong. “We cannot remove the foundation. Foundations have to be strengthened and not removed,” he said.
Asked about his next course of action, Warjri said environmental protection is a personal commitment he will not abandon.
“Protecting the environment is something which is in me, something I love. It is not something I can just discard. I cannot just leave it,” he added.
