Eddie Howe emerges as leading contender in Manchester United manager search
Manchester United are weighing up a significant decision on the future of Michael Carrick, with talkSPORT reporting that Eddie Howe has become the leading candidate if a change is made in the dugout.
Carrick remains in place for now and is expected to take charge of the Premier League meeting with Bournemouth, yet the mood around Old Trafford has shifted sharply after the damaging 4-1 defeat at Como. According to the report, Carrick “faces an uphill battle to save his job” and the club’s senior figures are actively considering what comes next.
The latest developments point to a split in preference among key decision-makers. Julian Nagelsmann, described as having already been approached over his interest, is said to be the “standout option” for head of recruitment Christopher Vivell. Jason Wilcox, though, is understood to favour a different route.
Jason Wilcox backing Eddie Howe
The central detail in this Manchester United manager search is Wilcox’s stance. The technical director is said to be “leaning towards appointing Eddie Howe if Michael Carrick is sacked”, largely because of Howe’s proven Premier League background. That matters in a moment of instability, with the club seeking a figure capable of handling both scrutiny and immediate performance demands.
There is an added layer here. Wilcox had previously resisted Howe’s candidacy when Dan Ashworth proposed him before Ruben Amorim’s arrival, which makes the current shift all the more notable. It suggests Howe’s availability, and United’s current vulnerability, may be changing minds internally.
Other names remain in the frame. Unai Emery is admired but would be difficult and expensive to prise away, while Fabian Hurzeler is understood to have no intention of leaving Brighton at this stage. Antonio Conte has also “put himself forward to replace Carrick” but that option is viewed as unlikely.
Bruno Fernandes outburst adds to Michael Carrick pressure
One of the most telling parts of the report centres on Bruno Fernandes. In what talkSPORT describes as “another ominous sign for Carrick”, United do not plan to punish the captain after his post-match reaction. That decision may prove as revealing as the result itself.

There is said to be “a fear in the boardroom” that Carrick is “losing the faith of the dressing room” after United’s poorest opening to a campaign in four decades. When a club begins to tolerate public frustration from its captain, it often points to a deeper concern behind the scenes.
Eddie Howe credentials under consideration
Howe has been out of work since leaving Newcastle United by mutual consent in the summer, and the report states “the feeling is he would be interested if the United vacancy came his way”. His record will naturally appeal. He guided Newcastle back into the Champions League in 2023 and again at the end of the 2024/25 season, while also delivering EFL Cup success in 2025, ending the club’s 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.
There will be some caution around the fact his final season ended with a 12th-place finish, his lowest placing at Newcastle. Even so, in a market where proven options are limited, Eddie Howe is clearly moving into serious contention as the Manchester United hierarchy assess whether Michael Carrick can survive this latest setback.
Our View
This all feels painfully familiar. One heavy defeat, one dressing room flashpoint, one briefing war over preferred candidates, and suddenly Manchester United are back in the cycle that has dragged the club down for years. The most worrying part is not even the result at Como, it is the suggestion that the hierarchy already seem to be looking beyond the current manager while still asking him to front up for the next match.
If Bruno Fernandes can go public after a 4-1 defeat and there is no punishment coming, then authority has clearly drained away. That is what alarms me most. Once a manager loses the dressing room, recovery becomes incredibly difficult, especially at a club where every weakness gets amplified.
Eddie Howe is a serious coach and far more credible than some of the names regularly thrown into these conversations. He has rebuilt teams before, improved players and handled Premier League pressure. But appointing him would only matter if United finally put a proper structure around the head coach. Otherwise, this will be another short-term fix sold as a long-term plan.
There is also a sense of drift in how these decisions are framed. One executive likes Nagelsmann, another prefers Howe, another candidate is admired but unavailable. It all sounds like a club still searching for clarity. That is the real concern. Until that changes, any manager walking into Old Trafford is stepping into the same storm.
