Michigan State football has a new opponent for its season-opener next year.
The Spartans will open the 2027 season against in-state foe Central Michigan. It was reported by FBSchedules.com that Michigan State and Central Michigan have agreed to move up their originally scheduled game for September 11 to August 28 of next year. This will now serve as the season-opener for the Spartans in 2027.
Michigan State was initially set to play Duquesne of the FCS level as their season-opener on September 4. But the new NCAA rule change that allows for more teams to open their season the week before Labor Day weekend meant Michigan State could move up their opener by a week.
The non-conference schedule for Michigan State remains the same as part of this change, just the dates have shifted. Michigan State will play Central Michigan on August 28, Duquesne on September 4 and Notre Dame on September 18. September 11 will now serve as a bye week.
