Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has announced a temporary gas shutdown in Karachi for repair work on its 24-inch Sher Shah mainline. The shutdown will begin at 10pm on Saturday and continue until 9am on Sunday. The company warned that an extension could cause low gas pressure in several neighbourhoods.

The potentially affected areas include Baldia Town, Ittehad Town, Saeedabad and Naval Colony. Residents of Musharraf Colony and Mawach Goth may also experience reduced gas pressure. Several parts of Orangi Town, including Gulshan-e-Bahar, Gulshan-e-Zia, Sector 16 and Ghaziabad, could face disruptions.
Other areas at risk include Altaf Nagar, Mehran City and Ramzan Goth. The SITE Industrial Area may also experience reduced gas pressure during the repair period. SSGC said the extent of the impact would depend on whether the shutdown continues beyond the scheduled hours.
Separately, Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik has directed SSGC’s board to develop a comprehensive strategy for improving the company’s financial performance. The plan will focus on controlling Unaccounted-for-Gas (UFG) and establishing a sustainable business model. The minister reviewed the company’s performance, operational challenges and future reform priorities during a meeting in Karachi with board members and senior management.

Company officials reported improvements in the gas distribution system, including an approximately 57% reduction in UFG in volumetric terms. The meeting was also informed that K-Electric, industrial consumers and fertiliser plants faced no gas load-shedding. Meanwhile, domestic consumers were receiving gas three times daily. The company continues to focus on improving distribution efficiency and strengthening its financial position.
