The RTA is currently reviewing plans for a new underground network that could change the face of Dubai’s public transport system
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is considering plans for a new underground transport network that could reshape how we travel around the city.
That’s according to Mattar Al Tayer, director general of RTA Dubai. Speaking at the Mohammed bin Rashid Leadership Forum this week, he confirmed that the RTA was reviewing a proposed plan for a new underground transport network, which would further enhance mobility across the city.
Per The National, the new underground network would integrate with Dubai’s existing transport system, while also allowing for more space above ground to be dedicated to community living, green spaces and walkable zones. A video presented alongside the Director General’s announcement showed footage of the metro trains travelling underground past key Dubai landmarks, indicating that this new underground network could be key in further enhancing accessibility to Dubai’s most popular spots.
Building on plans to expand public transport
The underground network is the latest in a series of enhancements set for Dubai’s public transport network. This summer, the much-anticipated Etihad Rail began passenger journeys, connecting Dubai with Abu Dhabi, Fujairah and Sharjah via train.
The Dubai Metro is also continuing to expand, with plans for a new Gold Line set for September 2032. The new Dubai Metro Gold Line will extend over 42 kilometres and 18 stations, marking Dubai’s first fully underground metro line, beginning at Jumeirah Golf Estates where it connects with Etihad Rail and running through the city to Al Ghubaiba.
Construction has also already commenced on Dubai Loop, Dubai’s futuristic underground transport system, being developed by the RTA in partnership with Elon Musk’s Boring Company. Initially, the service will begin in areas of Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and Dubai Mall, but will eventually feature 19 stations and cover 22km.
