Brave wants its token to do more than reward people for looking at ads. On July 9, 2026, the company unveiled BAT Roadmap 4.0, a plan to steer the Basic Attention Token toward what it calls a “transactional attention economy.”
The pitch arrives alongside a quieter shift. Brave is also rebuilding parts of its search infrastructure for a new kind of user: AI agents and the large language models behind them.
What Brave is building
The roadmap centers on payments, specifically payments that software can make without a human clicking “confirm.” Brave says it will support x402 and the Machine Payments Protocol, or MPP, both built for autonomous transactions.
The product list is long. Brave plans a unified Brave Wallet, integration with the Brave Search API, and a stablecoin privacy protocol called BravePay.
There is also a Brave Rewards Card in both physical and digital form.
Then comes the Creator Contribution Protocol. It is designed to route microroyalties to creators whenever AI uses their content.
Search, rebuilt for machines
On the search side, Brave has added tools aimed squarely at AI workflows. The LLM Context API and the Place Search API are designed to optimize how web search results are delivered as context to AI systems.
Brave says the LLM Context API is built to handle millions of AI queries each day. It also points to partner integrations, including Claude Cowork via Amazon Bedrock.
The underlying index covers more than 40 billion pages.
The search and payment pieces also connect. An agent that can search the web through Brave and pay through Brave-supported protocols is an agent that stays inside Brave’s ecosystem for more of its job.
The numbers behind the bet
Brave reports more than 120 million monthly active users and 51 million daily active users as of mid-2026.
The roadmap also carries a significant change for existing users. Ad units that pay out in BAT are set to be gradually phased out by the end of 2026.
Brave’s answer is a buyback mechanism: a percentage of revenue from Roadmap 4.0 products will fund BAT buybacks to sustain user rewards.
What this means for BAT holders and the market
For BAT holders, the biggest shift is in what drives demand for the token. Under the old model, BAT activity was linked closely to advertising. Under the new one, it is meant to be linked to payments, search usage, and creator compensation.
The phase-out of BAT-paying ad units is a risk worth watching. If the new payment products ramp slowly, there could be a gap between the old reward engine winding down and the new one gaining traction.
Key milestones to track include the launch timing of BravePay and the Rewards Card, uptake of x402 and MPP payments, and whether any major AI platforms adopt the Creator Contribution Protocol. The end-of-2026 ad unit phase-out also sets a natural deadline for judging whether the new model can carry the load.
