Gorkha, October 13
A total of 648 people, including 49 foreign tourists, have been rescued from areas affected by floods along the Budhi Gandaki River in Gorkha since Sunday.
Assistant Chief District Officer Netra Prasad Sharma said the remaining 599 evacuees were Nepali nationals. They had been stranded after floods damaged trekking trails and bridges connecting northern Gorkha with other parts of the district.
The Nepal Army has been using helicopters to rescue people from the affected areas.
According to Sharma, 96 people were rescued on Sunday, 321 on Monday, 186 on Tuesday and another 45 by Wednesday.
Rescue operations are continuing alongside relief distribution. Helicopters carrying relief supplies to the affected areas are bringing stranded people back on their return trips, Sharma said.
Relief materials, including food, tents, mats, pillows, blankets, tarpaulins, solar equipment and generators, are being distributed in coordination with local governments and organisations.
Relief supplies are being collected at a covered hall in Arughat Bazaar and transported by helicopter to the affected areas.
With floods damaging roads, bridges and trekking routes, helicopters have become essential for reaching stranded people and delivering relief supplies.
