From 14 medals to 114: How India achieved more with fewer athletes at Asian Para Games

From 14 medals in 2010 to 114 in 2026, India’s remarkable rise continued in Aichi-Nagoya as a smaller contingent surpassed its previous best, achieved 30 gold medals and secured its highest-ever finish at the continental para-sport showpiece.India’s campaign at the Asian Para Games 2026 was a triumph that few would have predicted when the size of the contingent became known. With just 167 athletes travelling to Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, the prospect of repeating the 100-plus medal haul achieved at Hangzhou in 2023 appeared ambitious. The previous edition had seen India send more than 300 athletes to the competition, returning with a record 108 medals after subsequent revisions to the original tally.

But the Indian contingent defied expectations, producing an even bigger return with significantly fewer athletes. India finished the fifth edition of the Asian Para Games with 114 medals — 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze — to secure fourth place, both the highest medal tally and the best finish in the country's history at the event. The numbers tell a compelling story of progress. India improved its medal tally for the fifth consecutive edition, added to its gold-medal record and finished ahead of South Korea, which had threatened to challenge its position in the final standings.

More than the record itself, the achievement highlighted how far India's para-sport movement has travelled in 16 years — from a modest 14-medal return at the inaugural edition in 2010 to a fourth-place finish among Asia's leading para-sport nations.

From 14 medals to 114: India's remarkable rise

India's progress at the Asian Para Games has been steady, with each edition bringing a new high in the overall medal tally. At Guangzhou in 2010, India won 14 medals — one gold, four silver and nine bronze — to finish 15th.

The 2014 edition in Incheon brought a substantial improvement, with the country collecting 33 medals, including three gold, but remaining 15th in the standings. The breakthrough arrived at Jakarta in 2018. India's medal tally rose to 72, comprising 15 gold, 24 silver and 33 bronze, while its position improved to ninth.Hangzhou in 2023 marked another major leap. India crossed the 100-medal barrier for the first time, initially returning with 111 medals before the tally was revised to 108 following a doping-related disqualification and a medal reallocation.

The revised haul comprised 27 gold, 32 silver and 49 bronze, with India eventually classified sixth.Aichi-Nagoya extended that upward trajectory. India added six medals to its revised Hangzhou total, increased its gold-medal count from 27 to 30 and climbed two places to fourth.

India's Asian Para Games record

The numbers at a glance: India's medal tally increased more than eightfold between 2010 and 2026. Its gold-medal count grew from one to 30, while its position improved from 15th to fourth.

The rise has not been limited to the overall tally. India has improved its standing in three successive editions since 2014, moving from 15th to ninth, then sixth and now fourth. The 2026 result represents the culmination of a sustained upward trend rather than an isolated breakthrough.

Smaller contingent, bigger return

The most striking feature of India's latest performance was the efficiency with which its athletes converted participation into medals.India fielded 167 athletes — 111 men and 56 women — across 11 sports at Aichi-Nagoya. That was considerably fewer than the 309 athletes listed for the Hangzhou campaign in 2023, yet the team surpassed its previous best by six medals.

Hangzhou vs Aichi-Nagoya

The comparison is revealing. India sent approximately 46 per cent fewer athletes than it did to Hangzhou, but its medal tally increased by nearly six per cent. The gold-medal count rose by three, the silver tally by three, and the bronze count remained unchanged.

On a simple medals-per-athlete measure, India's return increased from approximately 0.35 medals per athlete in Hangzhou to 0.68 in Aichi-Nagoya. This is an aggregate comparison, not an individual success rate, since athletes can win multiple medals and the number of events and opportunities varies across sports.Nevertheless, the figures underline the scale of the achievement. A smaller squad did not merely match the previous edition's success; it established a new benchmark for Indian para-sport.

Athletics powers India's medal surge

Para-athletics was the backbone of India's campaign, delivering 65 medals — 22 gold, 19 silver and 24 bronze. That represented nearly 57 per cent of the country's overall tally and made athletics the single biggest contributor to India's fourth-place finish.Para-badminton followed with 16 medals, including three gold, five silver and eight bronze. Together, athletics and badminton accounted for 81 medals, more than 70 per cent of India's total.Swimming contributed 11 medals, comprising three silver and eight bronze. Archery added six medals, including three gold and three silver, while shooting produced five, with two gold, two silver and one bronze.

India's leading medal-winning sports in Asian Para Games 2026

Athletics' contribution also illustrates how India's progress has accelerated. At Hangzhou, para-athletics produced 52 medals, including 16 gold, 17 silver and 19 bronze. In Aichi-Nagoya, the discipline's haul rose to 65, with six additional gold medals.Badminton's contribution was different. India won 21 medals in the sport at Hangzhou, including four gold, but finished with 16 in 2026. Instead, the substantial gains in athletics and the contributions from other sports helped compensate for the decline in badminton medals. That distinction matters: the record haul reflects both the strength of India's established medal-winning disciplines and the need to broaden its success across events in future editions.

Multiple medallists underline India's depth

India's record was supported by athletes who delivered more than once during the competition. A total of 26 Indian athletes won multiple medals, while six athletes collected multiple gold medals, demonstrating the importance of individual excellence in a campaign involving 11 sports.Archer Sheetal Devi was among the standout performers, winning two gold medals and a silver. Her two golds came in the mixed compound and individual compound events, while the silver added to her three-medal haul.Athletics provided several other multiple gold medallists. Dilip Gavit, Nishad Kumar, Pranav Soorma and Simran Sharma each won two gold medals, while shooting contributed through Mona Agarwal, who also secured two golds.Four athletes finished with three medals apiece: Sheetal Devi in archery, Thulasimathi Murugesan in badminton, Ravi Budigina in swimming and Himanshu Nandal in swimming. Their performances illustrated how athletes winning across multiple events can make a significant difference to a country's final tally. The figures also invite comparison with Hangzhou, where 25 Indian athletes won multiple medals. The increase to 26 in 2026 was modest, but the overall tally improved despite a much smaller contingent. The result points to a campaign in which medal-winning performances were concentrated among a relatively small squad.

Paralympic progress provides the wider context

India's rise at the Asian Para Games has coincided with a significant improvement at the Paralympics, strengthening the country's standing in international para-sport.At Rio 2016, India won four medals and finished 43rd. Tokyo 2020 marked a breakthrough, with 19 medals — five gold, eight silver and six bronze — lifting India to 24th. At Paris 2024, India recorded its best Paralympic haul of 29 medals, comprising seven gold, nine silver and 13 bronze, to finish 18th.The progression at the Paralympics mirrors the broader trend at the Asian Para Games: larger medal returns, more gold medals and improvements in the standings.India's able-bodied contingent had also finished fourth at the 2026 Asian Games, although its 85-medal tally was below the 106 medals achieved at Hangzhou in 2023. The para contingent's performance offered a contrasting story of growth, with its medal count rising and its position improving.

Fourth place sets a new benchmark

China dominated Aichi-Nagoya, finishing with 435 medals, including 207 gold. Hosts Japan were second with 186 medals, while Uzbekistan finished third with 145.

India placed fourth with 114, ahead of South Korea, which collected 100 medals, including 29 gold.India's final position was not guaranteed until the closing stages. South Korea remained within reach, but its final-day return of one gold and two silver left it one gold behind India. The Indian contingent held on to fourth place with 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze.

The gap to third-placed Uzbekistan shows that further progress will require India to expand its medal-winning strength across disciplines.

Yet the immediate achievement is significant: India has moved from 15th at the first two editions to fourth, while increasing its tally at every successive Games. The challenge now is to sustain that momentum, build a deeper pool of competitive athletes and reduce dependence on a handful of disciplines. For a contingent of just 167 athletes, 114 medals represent more than a record. They mark the latest step in a 16-year transformation of Indian para-sport — one that began with 14 medals in Guangzhou and has now culminated in a historic fourth-place finish in Aichi-Nagoya.
