Ionian University has launched a research project to develop a digital tool that monitors tourism’s impact and supports sustainable development across Greece’s Ionian Islands.
The project, called IonianDTwin, will create a “digital twin” — a digital representation of the islands that combines data from more than 25 sources. These will include information on air and sea quality, tourist arrivals, traffic, beach occupancy and resource consumption.
The platform will use this data to calculate 34 sustainability indicators. Machine-learning models will also forecast tourism demand, congestion and pressure on infrastructure. Artificial intelligence will allow users to search for information using everyday language.
The project incorporates anonymisation measures and personal data safeguards in line with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The platform will serve the Ionian Islands Region, municipalities, tourism businesses, residents and the research community. The project also предусматри a mobile application through which visitors and residents can check local conditions and anonymously report issues such as overcrowding or problems with public utility networks.
The university plans to pilot the platform and mobile application during the tourist season to assess their accuracy and ease of use. The project will also organise meetings with relevant organisations and thematic workshops involving local communities.
Ionian University’s Special Account for Research Funds is implementing the project, registered under Operational Programme System code 6061866. The project runs from 1 September 2026 to 28 February 2029.
It forms part of the “Ionian Islands 2021–2027” programme and receives co-funding from the European Regional Development Fund.
