Karis Davidson is playing some of the most clinical golf of her career right now. A six-under-par 66 on Thursday at the BMW Ladies Championship puts her in a tie for the lead at Pine Beach Golf Links. She is not just hanging around the top; she is actively hunting for her first LPGA Tour victory.
The numbers from her opening round are hard to ignore. Davidson went on a massive run during the back nine, recording seven birdies in a single nine-leg stretch, according to Golf Australia Magazine. She even came close to a hole-in-one on her first birdie of the day, which she described as “pretty cool” after a great day with her hybrids and irons.
The Path to the Tour Championship
This performance does more than just pad a scorecard. It moves her world ranking from 67th up to 26th in the live season-long points standings. This jump is massive because only the top 60 players qualify for the $US11 million Tour Championship in Florida later this year. Davidson has already shown she can handle the big stage, having finished tied for 12th at the Women’s PGA Championship in Minnesota this past June.
Her season has been incredibly consistent. She has made the cut in 15 of her last 17 starts and has pulled in $US785,600 in prize money so far. She is playing with a level of confidence that suggests the wins are coming soon.
Staying Steady Under Pressure
The leaderboard is crowded, but Davidson knows the real work starts now. She is currently tied with Japan’s Yuri Yoshida at the top of the tree. Other players like Haeran Ryu, Lucy Li, and Lauren Coughlin are also lurking near the top. The weather might not cooperate, which makes her plan even more important. Davidson said she is “Just trying to stay patient because I’m assuming it’s going to be really tough,”.
She plans to rely on the same ball striking that got her here. She noted that she will “just continuing to do that and try and keep up my good iron shots” to combat potential bad weather. If she keeps her irons sharp, the rest of the field is in serious trouble.
