A 19-year-old cyclist sustained serious injuries following a road traffic accident involving a Range Rover in Lusaka’s Salama Park area on Wednesday
Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Chipo Kaitisha said the accident occurred around 17:30 hours along Ginger Street.
The cyclist, a resident of Mtendere East Township, sustained a cut on the forehead, multiple bruises on the face and body, as well as general body pains. He is currently admitted to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital where he is receiving treatment.
The Range Rover, registration number MG 888, was being driven by Suzyo Shuwa, 31, of New Kasama, Lusaka. The driver escaped uninjured.
The collision extensively damaged the bicycle, while the motor vehicle sustained damage to the bonnet, grille, radiator and front number plate.
Preliminary investigations indicate the accident allegedly occurred when the driver attempted to overtake improperly and hit the cyclist as he was crossing the road.
The motor vehicle has been impounded at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Police Station pending re-examination by the Road Transport and Safety Agency.
A statement has been recorded from the driver, and investigations are ongoing.
Police have urged all road users to exercise caution and strictly adhere to traffic regulations, reminding drivers to overtake only when safe and lawful and to remain vigilant toward cyclists and other vulnerable road users.
