Covid spikes AGAIN - hospitalisations shoot up by 40% in two weeks and deaths rise too, as experts warn of early virus explosion

The number of Britons being hospitalised with Covid-19 has surged by more than 40 per cent in just two weeks, according to the most recent figures.

The NHS is tending to around 400 more patients with the infection than it was a fortnight ago.

Experts have warned the earlier-than-expected rise of Covid alongside flu could plunge the NHS into chaos this winter, after its busiest-ever summer.

October has so far seen 3,942 confirmed cases of Covid, suggesting the monthly total is likely to be double that of September.

There were 4,589 last month, which was already a three-fold jump from 1,374 in August.

New UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) statistics show that around 2.46 people in every 100,000 are being admitted to hospital with Covid each week.

That's a jump from 2.13 the previous week and 1.75 a fortnight ago - a rise of almost 41 per cent.

Those living in the West Midlands are at the highest risk of being admitted, the data shows.

Around 3.55 people in every 100,000 will need hospital treatment for the virus in areas like Birmingham.

By comparison, the South West – including cities like Bath – has the lowest admission rate, at around 1.5 per 100,000 people.

Separate figures show Covid deaths rose by 46.4 per cent in a week, increasing from 28 to 41 in the week until October 2 - the latest data available.

People aged 85 and over remain by far the most currently vulnerable group, with almost 27 admissions per 100,000 population – more than ten times the national average.

Around 13.5 per cent of over-85s are testing positive for Covid, compared with 8.8 per cent across all age groups.

Professor Frankie Swords, the national medical director at NHS England, warned last week that there are 'ominous early signs of winter pressure' on the horizon.

Flu has also been rising in recent weeks, with positive tests last month double what they were last September.

'Something is afoot,' wrote prominent epidemiologist Dr Caitlin Rivers in a recent edition of her influential medical newsletter, Force Of Infection.

Dr Adam Finn, emeritus professor of paediatrics at the University of Bristol, added: 'We don't usually see flu going up in that noticeable a way until December.

'So the visible increase in flu recorded in September really is quite early.'

This could be partially due to the lack of immunity to flu caused by the Covid lockdowns, he says.

'Covid changed all respiratory infections because no one was really socialising for around two years, so no one caught flu those winters,' adds Prof Finn.

'As a result, many people – particularly younger adults and children – have far less immunity to flu than they did before.'

That said, the latest figures suggest the early-season surge may be stabilising.

Hospital admissions for flu remained unchanged at 1.88 per 100,000 population last week, which is around 1,070 flu admissions per week.

Officials have urged Britons to get vaccinated against both flu and Covid.

'Flu levels are increasing with the possibility of an early flu season so now is the time for those eligible to get vaccinated,' said Dr Jamie Lopez Bernal, consultant epidemiologist at the UKHSA.

There are three main flu strains in circulation: two subtypes of influenza A – H1N1 and H3N2 – and influenza B. The flu vaccine is designed to protect against all three.

However, the UKHSA warned that some strains can 'drift' – when a virus changes genetically – which could make vaccines less effective against them.

A recent World Health Organisation report said 'drifted' AH1N1 viruses have been spotted in Europe, including in the UK.

Vaccines were said to be effective against drifted strains last year, but officials said they would need to stay vigilant because it is impossible to fully predict which strain will be most common this winter.

The main Covid strain currently is known as XFG or 'Stratus' and has been sweeping across North America and Europe since the end of 2025.

Officials stress that both levels of Covid and flu remain at low levels.

Speaking last week, about Covid, Dr Alex Allen, consultant epidemiologist at the UKHSA, said: 'The strains currently going around, including those known as XFG, are closely related to strains that have been with us for over a year, so this isn't something new.

'We're also not seeing any evidence that these are making people more ill or spreading faster than before, and this year's autumn vaccine has been specifically designed to protect against them.'
