A 23-year-old man, Aliyu Abubakar, has killed his older brother, 25-year-old Hafis Abubakar, during a fight over a singlet in Kwangila, Sabon Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The incident happened last Thursday on Wakili Street in Kwangila, leaving residents shocked.
The district head of Kwangila, Alhaji Ya’u Shehu, told Aminiya that people hurried to the scene after hearing about the incident and found Hafis lying in a pool of blood.
He said residents tried to take the victim to the hospital, but he died later.
“Their father is dead, and the deceased had left behind a child,” Shehu said, adding that the suspect was not found at the scene when community members arrived. Their mother, A’isha, had also reportedly fled.
The brothers’ stepmother said the fight started when Aliyu accused Hafis of often taking his clothes, including the singlet at the centre of the argument.
She said the argument got worse when Aliyu began insulting their mother. Hafis stepped in after Aliyu threatened her.
According to her, Hafis grabbed a cutlass and faced his younger brother, who then used a knife to cut his older brother’s throat.
She said neighbours called for help, but Aliyu and their mother left before community leaders and police got there.
Neighbours told Aminiya that the brothers often argued and claimed both used drugs. However, these claims have not been independently confirmed.
Other residents said the brothers’ arguments became more intense in the days before the fatal incident. They said a disagreement over clothing may have started the most recent conflict.
The Divisional Police Officer in Sabon Gari said police had arrested the brothers’ mother, A’isha Abubakar, but the main suspect was still on the run.
He said police were trying to find Aliyu and had sent details of the case to the Kaduna State Police Command for further investigation.
