Big Ten rivals Michigan and Penn State are each hoping to find some footing under first-year head coaches as they meet in Ann Arbor for the first time in four years this Saturday. The 3-3 Nittany Lions, led by Matt Campbell, travel to Michigan Stadium on the back of a three-loss streak, while the 3-2 Wolverines aren’t faring much better following two defeats on the bounce.
Michigan has had a week off to hit the reset button after losing to No. 17 Iowa and Minnesota, going 0-2 in the Big Ten so far this term. Penn State has also lost its ranking after losses to Wisconsin, Northwestern and No. 19 USC, effectively ending any chance of snagging a spot in this year’s College Football Playoffs.
Kyle Whittingham can still cling onto some hope of getting the Wolverines into that post-season mix, especially with how bad Penn State is playing at present. Despite recent results, Michigan lost those past two games by an average 3.5-point margin, while PSU’s average losing margin across its last three outings is 11 points.
There have been calls for Whittingham to bench sophomore quarterback Bryce Underwood in favor of freshman Tommy Carr, who has had very minimal game time this season. Campbell is in a similar position with senior starter Rocco Becht but continued to back his QB1 after a disappointing loss to USC.
