US President Donald Trump expects Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to observe the energy ceasefire and stop strikes on Russian oil refineries, Axios reported.
“Trump is really mad. He feels Zelensky is taking the U.S. for granted,” a White House source told Axios.
If the refinery strikes end, the next step could be a deal to halt attacks on power plants and the energy grid.
Axios says the arrangement, under which Russia and Ukraine would refrain from striking refineries, is not an equal one. Ukraine has only one refinery, and according to a Ukrainian source cited by the outlet, it is not operating at full capacity after Russian attacks.
Russia has not yet officially accepted the energy ceasefire. According to a source who spoke to Axios, “The Russians are thinking about” it, and “we will know soon if they are ready.”
President Donald Trump announced on October 11 that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a ceasefire in the energy sector. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Axios that the announcement came as “news” to him.
Trump had previously announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine on September 14. Russia and Ukraine continued to exchange strikes.
