The Dallas Cowboys did not score against the Green Bay Packers until 9:19 remained in the third quarter Sunday night at Lambeau Field. Green Bay won 23-13 for its third straight victory and moved to 4-2.
Jordan Love threw for 276 yards and a touchdown and ran for another.
1. Two interceptions became 10 Green Bay Packers points
With 1:53 left in the first quarter, Dee Winters picked off a Love pass intended for Matthew Golden at the Green Bay 42. Winters ran it back for a touchdown, but replay ruled him down at the 42, where Golden had touched him.
Six plays later, on third-and-8 from the Green Bay 17, Evan Williams intercepted Dak Prescott at the 3 and returned it 17 yards. That set up a 15-play, 73-yard drive and a 25-yard Trey Smack field goal.
Rookie cornerback Brandon Cisse picked off Prescott at the Green Bay 18 with two minutes left in the half, the first interception of his NFL career. Nine plays later, Love scored on a 1-yard run with 25 seconds left.
Green Bay scored 10 points off its two takeaways. Dallas scored none off Love’s interception.
Packers coach Matt LaFleur credited defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon’s pressure.
“I thought JG was aggressive and, you know, getting pressure on the quarterback,” LaFleur said. “It’s hard to throw when you’ve got stuff in your face. And I thought the coverage was outstanding.”
“They’re getting a lot of turnovers right now, which is, you know, it’s what you need,” Love said of the defense. “So I think they’re playing at a high level.”
A third interception, by Carrington Valentine with 7:44 left, was wiped out by a roughing-the-passer penalty on Lukas Van Ness.
2. The Green Bay Packers settled for three field goals
Green Bay reached the red zone four times and scored two touchdowns, both in the first half.
The first field goal came after the Packers had first-and-goal at the Dallas 6. Pierre Strong Jr. ran for 5 yards, then lost 1. Love’s third-down pass to Tucker Kraft gained nothing at the 2, and a delay-of-game penalty pushed Smack’s kick back to 25 yards.
The Packers scored 6 points in the second half. They went 2 of 8 on third down after halftime, following a 9-of-10 first half. Smack’s 44-yarder came after a third-and-6 incompletion at the Dallas 26, and his 29-yarder followed a third-and-8 incompletion at the 11.
“We had opportunities offensively, I think, to really put them away. We never did it,” LaFleur said.
“There’s a couple I wish we could have ended in a touchdown today, but that’s what it’s all about,” Love said.
By Wisconsin Sports Heroics’ count Monday, Golden and Christian Watsondropped three would-be touchdowns.
3. Dallas went 0 for 2 on fourth down against the Green Bay Packers in the fourth quarter
Down 20-7, Dallas went for it on fourth-and-2 at midfield with 13:33 left. Prescott’s pass for CeeDee Lamb fell incomplete with Javon Bullard in coverage. Nine plays later, Smack’s 29-yard field goal made it 23-7.
Roughing-the-passer calls on Van Ness and Karl Brooks moved the next Dallas drive to the Green Bay 13. Fourteen plays in, Prescott threw incomplete for Lamb again, this time on fourth-and-11 from the 14 with 5:05 left.
Lamb caught nine of his 18 targets for 70 yards.
Dallas finished 5 of 13 on third down and 2 of 4 on fourth. The Cowboys ran 15 times for 48 yards.
Green Bay was penalized 11 times for 96 yards, including three roughing calls in the fourth quarter.
“We’ve got to continue to work with our guys, continue to educate them, and we’ve got to learn from some of these because it’s far too many,” LaFleur said.
The Packers play at the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 3:25 p.m. CT on FOX. Running back Josh Jacobswill return as the starter.
