From misty cloud forests and abundant biodiversity to tucked-away waterfalls and some of the world’s top surf breaks, Costa Rica is the ultimate destination for the adventurous traveler. But in this Central American country, big adventures don’t mean sacrificing thoughtful accommodations. And there are plenty of spectacular Airbnbs in Costa Rica that put guests in the perfect location to explore all the beauty this country has to offer.
In Tamarindo, expansive villas designed for indoor-outdoor living sit within walking distance of the area’s golden beaches and surf breaks. In Monteverde, cozy one-bedroom cabins offer a front-row seat to the diverse wildlife in the country’s cloud forest region. And in San Cayetano de Venecia, near the Arenal Volcano, travelers interested in regenerative agriculture can stay on a working dairy farm amid miles of rolling pastures where cows graze.
I spend at least a month in Costa Rica every year, and because I love adventure and wellness in equal measure—and have a soft spot for boutique design—I prefer staying at a vacation rental when I'm here. I can spend the day exploring the incredible nature, then come home to one of the spots below that feature amenities like private plunge pools, saunas, and hot tubs. That range is part of what makes Costa Rica so rewarding to visit.
Read on for the top Costa Rica Airbnbs for every type of traveler, whether you’re a solo adventurer looking to zip-line or a couple who wants to spend all day in the pool.

Why we love it: Gated community, jungle views, floor-to-ceiling windows, beach access, dipping pool with sun loungersAbout 30 minutes south of Tamarindo is the picturesque coastal community of Playa Avellanas, and this floor-to-ceiling contemporary refuge may be the most stunning villa in the area. Gated communities like Indo Avellanas—in which Villa Poro Poro is one of six contemporary residences—surround the beach. Inspired by Indonesian design and built with locally sourced materials, this two-bedroom home feels enmeshed in nature and balances indoor-outdoor living throughout. On the ground floor, a double-height living area and fully equipped kitchen open directly onto an outdoor dipping pool surrounded by sun loungers, all easily accessed through sliding glass doors. Inside, a teak staircase connects the first and second floors and provides access to both bedrooms, where blackout shades ensure a great night’s rest. The villa is less than a five-minute walk to the white-sand Playa Avellanas, where surf breaks for all levels abound.

Only steps from the sand, the entire home is spread across one floor, making it especially convenient for multigenerational groups. All rooms offer king-size beds except one, which has double bunk beds perfect for children. The open-concept kitchen and living area feature plenty of space to entertain, with a light, airy layout framed by views of the surrounding cacti and palm garden. Octagon-shaped villa in Montezuma near the ocean
Number of guests: 4
Bed and bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath
Why we love it: Oceanfront garden with hammocks, natural tide pool, daily housekeepingOne of the only properties sitting directly on the ocean in Montezuma, Casa Sol is an octagonal, two-story villa with hardwood floors and a radial wood ceiling. The architecture alone makes it worth a stay: A spiral staircase, vaulted beamed ceilings, and artistic touches throughout make the home feel more like an art installation than a rental. While the property's interior is impressive, don’t discount the outdoor amenities: Casa Sol is part of the boutique Hotel Amor de Mar, so guests have access to hammocks in the oceanfront garden, a natural tide pool in the rocks, spa services, and a restaurant serving fresh, local breakfast. The famous Montezuma Waterfall is directly across the street, and two beaches are within a 10-minute walk in either direction.

It's the ideal escape if seeing monkeys and toucans is on your Costa Rica bucket list. This design-forward two-bedroom retreat is built for couples or small groups of friends who want privacy without sacrificing comfort. The open-concept layout leans into indoor-outdoor living—think morning coffee on the deck as birds pass through, evenings around the barbecue, and nights in the dipping pool with excellent stargazing opportunities. Both queen en suite bedrooms have memory foam mattresses, and the fully equipped kitchen means you can load up on groceries before you arrive and cook at home as easily as you can eat out. Outside, an expansive deck with a dining table faces directly into the jungle canopy. When errands are necessary, the town is only five minutes away.

Exceptional Playa Hermosa villa built for pampering
Number of guests: 10
Bed and bath: 5 bedrooms, 5.5 baths
Why we love it: Infinity saltwater pool, proximity to the beach, weekly wellness programmingI stayed at this villa, called Pandora, in the spring, and it was the perfect home base for one of the most effortless trips I've ever taken. One of five villas in the Rayo Verde complex, Pandora may also be the most architecturally striking, with coral-tinted concrete walls, intricate carved woodwork, and double-height living spaces—the kind of pink-walled, light-drenched architecture that feels deliberately, confidently feminine. Large sliding glass doors can connect the kitchen and living areas with the jungle and pool, or seal shut when AC is warranted. The beach is within a minute's walk.
Rayo Verde's shared palapa hosts a weekly calendar of mat Pilates, yoga, and sound healing, with an ice plunge and sauna also on-site. The staff pre-stocks the kitchen based on your grocery list before you arrive, housekeeping cycles through multiple times a day (you won't wash a single dish), and security and concierge staff are on hand throughout. When you're ready to get in the water, local surf instructor Pablo Sandoval meets guests on the beach daily to teach how to navigate the break at Playa Hermosa.

FAQ:
What are the best places to visit in Costa Rica?
Nosara and Santa Teresa on the Nicoya Peninsula draw surfers and wellness seekers with consistent breaks and a laid-back, creative community. The Osa Peninsula, home to Corcovado National Park, is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, and is worth the journey for the wildlife encounters alone. Monteverde's cloud forest is unlike anywhere else, and the Central Valley offers volcanic hot springs, coffee farms, and easy access to the rest of the country.
Most visitors underestimate how long it takes to get between regions, but small regional airlines like Costa Rica Green Airways and SANSA make it easy to hop between destinations quickly. Even so, budget more travel time than you think you need.
Is it safe to rent a vacation rental in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica is one of the most stable and tourist-friendly countries in Central America, and its Airbnb market is well-established. As with anywhere, common sense applies: read recent reviews carefully, confirm road conditions for remote properties (it’s common for places to require a four-wheel-drive car here), and book through verified platforms with Superhosts if possible. Coastal areas and tourist towns are well accustomed to visitors, and most hosts are highly responsive. Travel insurance is always a good idea.
If you're visiting during the rainy season (May through November), pay close attention to weather conditions before embarking on a road trip, as unpaved roads can become impassable quickly and river crossings that were straightforward in the dry season can become riskier.
How many days do I need in Costa Rica?
I recommend visiting for at least a week, since certain areas can require lengthy travel days with multiple flights. Most visitors from the US will first arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport near the country’s capital, San José, and then likely connect to a smaller town via a regional charter flight on SANSA or Costa Rica Green Airways.
When is the best time of year to visit Costa Rica?
Most travelers eager to surf and soak up the best of the country’s coastlines will want to visit during the dry season, which typically runs from December through April. If you’re more of a wildlife enthusiast who wants to visit the rainforests, any time of year is fine, as the showers can add to the ambiance of trekking through the rainforest.
