First Lady of Nigeria Oluremi Tinubu, has called for greater investment in agricultural innovation, support for farmers and reduction of food waste as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s food security and ensure access to safe and nutritious food for all families.
The First Lady made the call in a message to mark World Food Day 2026, observed on Friday, October 16, with the theme, “Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow.”
She said the commemoration offered an opportunity to reflect on the importance of embracing innovation while preserving traditional knowledge that strengthens food systems.
According to her, combining modern innovations with indigenous agricultural knowledge is essential to building sustainable food systems capable of meeting the nutritional needs of present and future generations.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to support farmers and adopt sustainable practices, stressing the need to minimise food waste and promote access to nutritious food for every household.
“Let us support our farmers, reduce food waste, and promote sustainable practices that will ensure access to safe and nutritious food for every family,” she said.
The First Lady expressed optimism that sustained commitment to these measures would help Nigeria achieve food security and secure a healthier future for generations to come.
“With sustained commitment, we can build a food-secure nation and create a healthier future for generations to come,” she said.
World Food Day is observed annually on October 16 to raise awareness of hunger, food security and the need for action towards ensuring that everyone has access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food.
