The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing off against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. Leafs star Auston Matthews is speaking out about how Toronto can slow down Connor McDavid and Edmonton.
“Same thing when we were in Colorado a couple weeks ago,” Matthews said, per NHL.com. “A lot of nights you’re going to play some really good players, some really elite players, you just try to limit their time and space as much as possible, but they’re very good. They’re going get their chances, they’re going get their opportunities, and they’re going to make something out of nothing sometimes. So just trying to limit that as much as you can.”
The Oilers are led by one of the NHL’s biggest stars in McDavid. McDavid and his Oilers are out to a scorching hot start to the campaign. Edmonton enters the game with eight victories, and 17 total points.

McDavid has already posted 31 points on the season. He is first in the NHL in points and assists.
“I don’t think it’s really too surprising,” Matthews said. “Since he came in the League, he’s been the standard. Obviously, a fantastic player and not too many people in history have done what he’s continued to do, so it’s obviously really impressive. I have a lot of respect for him. It’s a very, very big challenge.”
Toronto is on a mission this season to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Leafs are one of the most historic franchises in hockey, with 13 Stanley Cup titles. During the 2025-26 campaign, Toronto had one of their worst campaigns in years.
Toronto enters the contest Saturday with a 6-4-2 record. The Oilers and Leafs take to the ice Saturday night at 7:00 ET.
