The Washington Commanders settled for a Week 5 tie with the New York Giants after a head-scratching overtime sequence.
The Giants gave the Commanders a golden opportunity to steal a win when Cam Skattebo fumbled in field-goal range with two minutes left. Washington drove to New York's 26 in the closing minute, seemingly setting up a potential game-winning field-goal try for Drew Stevens.
Rather than sending out Stevens, the Commanders moved up two yards on a first-down run. The offense then stayed on the field for a baffling play that cost Washington a win.
Jayden Daniels appeared to stumble after taking the snap, then held the ball and tried to scramble outside the pocket. The Giants cornered him for a sack by the line of scrimmage to keep the clock ticking, and the Commanders ran out of time to spike the ball.
Instead of defeating their NFC East rival, the Commanders remain two games behind the Giants after a disappointing draw. Fans couldn't believe what they saw, and many ripped the quarterback on social media.
"Jayden Daniels just committed the dumbest play in NFL history," Marshall Green claimed.
"What in the world was Dan Quinn thinking? Or Jayden Daniels?" Fox Sports pundit Colin Cowherd asked. "That’s a fireable offense. Completely inexcusable."
"Why wasn’t this play a spike? Utter incompetence," Matt Wright said.
"In field goal range? Wow. Poor clock management," Kelly Storms wrote.
"Jayden Daniels makes the biggest mistake of his career and costs them the game," a fan declared. "No excuses as to why he didn't spike the ball."

Daniels took accountability for the miscue in his post-game press conference.
“We all gotta be better situationally,” Daniels said. “Starts with me. Everybody will say the same thing, but we just gotta be better at situational football. ... We gotta stop the clock. We gotta know the situation. We gotta relay that as an offense. It starts from everybody top down. Ultimately, it’s on me"
