Rankings in bold are from this week’s Sentinel Super 16 coaches poll. Teams are listed with win-loss records in parentheses. District records are included for district games.
Marquee matchups
No. 1 DeLand (7-1, 2-0) at Mainland (4-3, 2-0)
Coverage by Chris Hays
This Volusia County rivalry dates to 1922 with the Buccaneers leading 54-31. But DeLand won 28-21 last year.
The game is at Daytona Stadium.
No. 4 Seminole (8-0, 2-0) at Lake Brantley (4-4, 1-1) *
Coverage by Chris Martucci
Seminole is in the driver’s seat but Brantley can take the 6A District 3 if it scores the upset. In that scenario, the Patriots will be the champ if Lake Mary (1-7, 0-2) beats Apopka (3-4, 1-1). If Lake Brantley and Apopka win it goes to a three-way tiebreaker, based on MaxPreps rankings, that Seminole would almost certainly win.
Seminole is 11-0 against Brantley since 2017.
No. 8 Edgewater (4-3, 2-0) at No. 13 Dr. Phillips (5-3, 1-1)*
Coverage by Steve Gorches
Edgewater wins the 6A District 6 title if it beats DP. If the Panthers win at home and West Orange also wins it means MaxPreps rankings will break the three-way tie.
The Eagles routed DP the past two years in the only meetings since 2012.
No. 12 East Ridge (6-2, 2-0) at No. 11 Ocoee (4-3, 2-0)*
Coverage by Jean Racine
Somebody is going to celebrate its first district title in a long time.
Ocoee’s only championship came in 2016, when it finished 7-4.
East Ridge won four titles under legendary coach Bud O’Hara, but the most recent was in 2008.
Other Super 16 games
No. 2 The First Academy (6-1) at Ambassador Christian (Huntersville, N.C.) (6-2)
The Royals, who are 1-6 in three seasons against out-of-state powers, are favored to win on this road trip, according to MaxPreps.
Lake Region (3-5, 0-3) at No. 3 Jones (6-2, 2-1)*
Bishop Moore, Jones and Lake Wales (which beat the Tigers) are jockeying for the No. 1 seed position in 4A Region 2.
No. 5 Bishop Moore (6-2, 3-0) at New Smyrna Beach (5-2, 1-2)* #
The Hornets have already clinched the 4A District 6 title.
No. 6 Lake Nona (7-1, 3-0) at Tohopekaliga (4-4, 1-2)*
The Lions have won five in a row and clinched the 6A District 5 title last week.
Olympia (3-5, 0-2) at No. 7 West Orange (6-1, 1-1)*
West Orange edged South Lake 20-17 on Monday and can win two home games this week.
The “Backyard Bowl” is dead-even, 11-11, but West Orange has won six of the past seven meetings.
No. 9 Oviedo (6-2, 4-0) at No. 14 Lake Howell (4-3, 2-1)*
Oviedo can clinch its fourth consecutive district title and it has won 20 in a row against the Silverhawks.
Lake Howell wants its first championship since 1996 but a lot would have to happen. The Silverhawks could finish first in 5A District 5 if they beat Oviedo and Viera (Nov. 4), and Lyman (2-6, 1-3) stuns Melbourne (6-2, 3-1) on Friday.
No. 10 Evans (4-3, 2-0) at Wekiva (2-6, 0-2)*
Evans, the 5A District 4 champ, has scored 46 or more points in three of its wins.
No. 14 Innovation (8-0) at Nova Lakes (2-6)
Bulls are the top-ranked team out of 34 in the FHSAA Independent League’s Pool A (larger schools) standings and are revving up for a regular season finale against backyard rival Lake Nona.
Timber Creek (5-2, 1-1) at No. 16 Hagerty (5-2, 2-0)*
Hagerty is in the driver’s seat in 6A District 4, but if Timber Creek prevails and Winter Park (3-4, 1-1) beats Boone (3-4, 0-2) it creates a three-way tie that would be decided by rankings. Hagerty has the upper hand in MaxPreps at this point.
Timber Creek can take the title if it wins and Winter Park loses.
Games of note
Mount Dora Christian Academy (6-1) at Seffner Christian (9-0)
MDCA, ranked No. 2 in Pool B of the FHSAA Independent League, travels to the Tampa area to face the No. 1 team in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference.
The Bulldogs only loss was 16-15 against a 7-1 Santa Fe Catholic team.
Colonial (3-5) at University (Orlando) (7-1)
The Cougars, playing in Pool A of the Independent League outside district play, can tie its school record for wins in a season. University finished 8-3 with a playoff loss in 2013.
