KUALA LUMPUR: A 28-year-old worker was killed when a drunk driver rammed his car into him while he was installing warning signs along Lebuhraya Sultan Iskandar early today.
City police Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the 26-year-old driver recorded an alcohol breath screening reading of 64mg/100ml and was arrested and remanded for three days until Monday to assist in investigations.
He said the accident occurred at about 5am when the car, travelling from Jalan Damansara towards Jalan Parlimen, lost control and struck two workers in the left lane.
"The victim, a supervisor, was pronounced dead while receiving treatment, while another worker, a 49-year-old lorry driver, sustained injuries to his head and right hand. The lorry driver is receiving treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital. The car driver escaped uninjured.
"The five workers, comprising a supervisor, a lorry driver and three Bangladeshi workers, had been carrying out warning sign installation works under a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) contract.
"The work began at 11pm on Oct 23 and ended at 4am today," he said in a statement.
Zamzuri said the case was being investigated under Sections 44(1)(b) and 44(1A)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Section 44 of the Act covers offences involving driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs that causes death.
Those with information about the incident are urged to contact the Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-2071 9999 or any nearby police station.
