Meta Platforms just spent more money than its business brought in. For a company that has printed cash for over ten years, that is a genuinely unusual sentence to write.
The social media giant reported negative free cash flow of $2.12 billion for the third quarter of 2026, its first quarterly dip below zero in over a decade. The culprit is no mystery: an aggressive push to build out artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The math behind the red ink
For the quarter ending September 30, Meta generated $32.79 billion in operating cash flow. Capital expenditures, however, came in at $34.91 billion. The gap between those two figures is exactly where the negative $2.12 billion comes from.
Most of that spending went toward data centers and compute capacity. In plain terms, Meta is buying the chips, buildings and power needed to train and run increasingly large AI models.
Revenue rose 26% year-over-year to $64.60 billion, ahead of analyst estimates of roughly $63.37 billion.
Wall Street shrugs, then cheers
Shares rose approximately 4% in after-hours trading following the report. The strong revenue performance and progress on AI, including new models like Muse, apparently outweighed any concerns about the cash burn.
Meta also signaled it has no plans to ease off the accelerator. The company raised its full-year 2026 capital expenditure guidance to a range of $135 billion to $145 billion.
The company still has a hefty cushion. Meta held $82.45 billion in cash as of September 30, giving it plenty of runway to keep funding its AI ambitions.
It also kept rewarding shareholders, paying out $1.36 billion in dividends during the quarter. With free cash flow in negative territory, that payout effectively came out of the reserves rather than from the quarter’s leftover cash.
Familiar territory for Zuckerberg’s company
Meta has a history of placing very large, very expensive bets on the future. The last one had a name you may remember: the metaverse.
Reality Labs, the division responsible for virtual reality and metaverse efforts, has accumulated over $80 billion in operating losses so far.
The current AI push echoes that earlier spending spree in scale and conviction. The key difference is that AI sits much closer to Meta’s core money-making engine. Better AI can improve ad targeting, content recommendations and the tools businesses use on Meta’s platforms.
What this means for Meta and its investors
With full-year capex guidance of $135 billion to $145 billion, the cash flow squeeze could continue as long as spending outpaces the revenue those investments generate. If heavy investment stretches into 2027 without matching revenue growth, the free cash flow picture could stay under pressure.
For shareholders, the $82.45 billion cash pile is the reassuring part of the story. Meta is not in any danger of running dry, and it can absorb several quarters like this one.
Things to watch next: whether capex lands at the top or bottom of the new guidance range, how quickly AI products like Muse feed into revenue, and whether operating cash flow can catch up with the building spree.
