A public dispute has emerged between Ledger's chief executive and the former head of collapsed exchange Mt. Gox over a $90 million wallet theft case.
A public disagreement has broken out between Ledger's chief executive and the former head of Mt. Gox over a wallet theft scandal involving approximately $90 million. BeInCrypto and crypto.news both reported the clash on October 18, 2026, though the full details of the dispute remain contested between the two figures.
Ledger is one of the best-known makers of hardware wallets, devices designed to keep private keys offline and away from internet-connected threats. The company has built its reputation on promoting self-custody as a safer alternative to leaving funds on exchanges. Any controversy touching on wallet security or theft claims carries weight for a firm whose business depends on user trust.
The former Mt. Gox boss brings his own complicated history to the exchange. Mt. Gox was once the world's largest Bitcoin exchange before it collapsed in 2014 following the loss of hundreds of thousands of bitcoins. That collapse remains one of the defining cautionary tales in crypto history, frequently cited in debates about custody, exchange security, and the case for self-custody solutions like those Ledger sells.
Details of the current $90 million wallet theft scandal, and how each party characterizes the other's role or statements, were not fully specified in available reporting. What is clear is that the dispute has become public, with both figures reportedly pushing back against each other's claims. The nature of the clash, whether it concerns blame, technical responsibility, or public statements, has not been uniformly described across the reports.
The timing is notable given how often past security failures are invoked in ongoing arguments about custody practices. Mt. Gox's history continues to shape how the industry frames trust, transparency, and accountability. A dispute involving a figure tied to that collapse and the head of a major hardware wallet company touches a sensitive nerve for an industry still working to convince mainstream users that digital assets can be held safely.
Neither BeInCrypto nor crypto.news detailed the specific wallets involved, the timeline of the alleged theft, or whether any funds have been recovered. The $90 million figure appears consistently across the available reporting, but the broader circumstances, including who holds responsibility, remain part of the unfolding disagreement between the two executives.
Market Impact
Public disputes involving prominent crypto security figures can affect sentiment toward the specific companies named, particularly when self-custody and wallet security are central to the disagreement. Ledger's business model rests heavily on user confidence in its hardware devices, so any scandal referencing wallet theft could draw scrutiny from its customer base and competitors alike.
Broader market impact appears limited based on currently available facts, since no exchange outages, fund freezes, or systemic custody failures have been reported. Investors and users of hardware wallets may watch for further statements from either party, as additional details could clarify whether the scandal reflects a technical vulnerability or a dispute over past events and public statements.
The disagreement between Ledger's CEO and the former Mt. Gox executive highlights how past exchange failures continue to inform present-day debates over crypto custody. Further details from both parties are likely needed before the full scope of the $90 million wallet theft scandal becomes clear.
