There are two kinds of Formula 1 reserve drivers. The first kind spends weekends in a team jacket, does a lot of simulator work, and slowly turns into an answer to a trivia question. The second kind gets handed something to race. McLaren has just decided Leonardo Fornaroli belongs in the second group.
On Monday, October 19, McLaren confirmed that the reigning FIA Formula 2 champion will race for the McLaren Hypercar Team in the 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship, Le Mans included, driving the new MCL-HY. He also keeps his job as McLaren’s F1 reserve driver. The 21-year-old from Piacenza now has two employers under one roof, and one very full calendar.
The confirmed part
- The seat: a 2027 WEC Hypercar drive with McLaren, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 12–13.
- The day job: he stays on as McLaren’s F1 reserve driver.
- The team-mates so far: Mikkel Jensen, Laurens Vanthoor and Alex Lynn. The WEC’s own announcement puts the target at six drivers, so the roster is two-thirds full.
- The boss: Hypercar team principal James Barclay called him “an exceptional talent.”
That’s the whole announcement. What it tells us about how McLaren is running its young drivers is more interesting.
A champion with nowhere to race
Fornaroli’s résumé is about as strong as a junior driver’s gets. He won the 2024 FIA Formula 3 title with Trident and the 2025 Formula 2 title with Invicta Racing, sealing the F2 crown in Qatar with a round to spare. McLaren signed him to its Driver Development Programme in December 2025 and made him F1 reserve for 2026.
The trouble is the McLaren F1 car only has two seats, and neither is open. The usual outcome for a feeder-series champion in that position is a long wait. Felipe Drugovich won F2 in 2022 and then spent three seasons as Aston Martin’s reserve without a Grand Prix start. Théo Pourchaire won it in 2023 and had to go looking for racing in Super Formula and IndyCar. A title buys you a phone call. It doesn’t buy you a car.
McLaren’s fix keeps everything in-house. Fornaroli gets a full season of racing against factory drivers, with real pressure and real results, and McLaren never lets go of him. No loan to a rival, no gap year, no rusty reserve who hasn’t raced in 18 months when the call finally comes.
Why his junior record fits endurance racing
The most telling stat on Fornaroli’s record isn’t from F2. It’s from 2024, when he won the F3 title without winning a single race. He scored points in 18 of 20 starts, took seven podiums, and clinched the championship with a pass on Christian Mansell at the final corner of the final race at Monza.
In single-seaters, people treated that as a funny footnote. In endurance racing, it’s basically the job description. A six-hour race doesn’t care about one heroic lap. It cares about stints with no mistakes, keeping the tires alive, getting through GT3 traffic without losing time, and handing the car to a team-mate in one piece. A driver who wins titles by being too consistent to beat should find Hypercar a natural fit.
He’ll still need to learn a lot. Sharing a car means sharing a seat position and a setup with drivers of different heights and preferences. Nobody in F2 has to drive at night or deal with Balance of Performance swings from one round to the next. And single-seater racing does nothing to prepare you for Le Mans traffic on the Mulsanne at 3 a.m.
Who he’ll learn from
McLaren has put a very experienced group around him. Vanthoor won the 2024 WEC drivers’ title with Porsche Penske Motorsport and spent a decade as a Porsche factory driver. Jensen joined Peugeot’s Hypercar program in 2022 and reached a WEC podium every season from 2023 to 2025. Lynn joins from Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA, whose 2027 WEC line-up now has to be built without him.
McLaren hasn’t said who drives with whom. One obvious approach would be to pair the 21-year-old with a former world champion and let him learn by watching the data. The other two seats are still empty, and they’ll show whether McLaren wants more experience or more young talent from its own programme.
The calendar problem
Being a reserve driver only matters if you’re available when needed. The 2027 WEC schedule has nine rounds, from Qatar on March 27 to Bahrain on November 6, and runs right through the heart of the F1 season. Le Mans week also covers far more than race day once you add test day, scrutineering and the build-up.
McLaren’s announcement doesn’t explain how it will cover F1 reserve duties when the two series clash. Reserve drivers have shared calendars with other series before, so it can be managed. The question is who will be on standby at a Grand Prix when Fornaroli is racing a Hypercar in another country. That’s worth watching for when McLaren announces the rest of its 2027 driver roster.
The F1 work isn’t finished
Fornaroli’s 2026 F1 work isn’t done either. McLaren has confirmed he’ll drive the MCL40 in FP1 at the Mexico City and São Paulo Grands Prix. Those are the team’s last two mandatory rookie sessions of the year, after earlier runs in Barcelona and Hungary. He prepared at Paul Ricard, where he covered almost 350 km in the 2025 MCL39. It was his sixth F1 test with the team, and it focused on long runs that simulate a practice session.
So when you see him in Mexico, think of it as his last F1 exam before endurance racing takes over his schedule.
McLaren’s Le Mans history raises the stakes
McLaren won Le Mans outright on its debut in 1995 with the F1 GTR, so its 2027 return to the top class comes with high expectations. The MCL-HY has already had a test with Lando Norris at Portimão, and the project is run with United Autosports. Whether Norris himself can fit Le Mans into the 2027 calendar is a separate question.
Signing Fornaroli suggests McLaren doesn’t see the Hypercar program as a side project. It’s using it to develop its own drivers. If he goes well in 2027, McLaren will have a reserve who’s race-sharp and has proven himself in a world championship. If he doesn’t, McLaren still has a fast young driver who learned a lot in one year. In both cases McLaren keeps hold of the driver it signed.
