THE RUNDOWN
- Doja Cat turned 31 on October 21.
- She appears to have celebrated her birthday with a Sanrio-themed party at Living Room in Los Angeles on Friday.
- The singer channeled Mocha for the occasion.
Doja Cat brought a little kawaii energy to Los Angeles for her birthday this week.
The singer celebrated her 31st birthday in L.A.’s Living Room with a party that appeared to take inspiration from the beloved Japanese character universe.
To lead the way, the Vie singer seemed to channel the beloved Sanrio character Mocha. Mocha is a dog who is recognizable for her brown coloring and sweet, girlish aesthetic in addition to being “fashionable and talkative”; she’s from the Cinnamoroll universe and is the leader of an idol group named Cinnamoangels, which also includes Chiffon and Azuki.
The Sanrio-themed party feels right at home with Doja’s penchant for experimenting with aesthetics and embracing internet culture—lest we forget her early viral video “Mooo!” From elaborate transformations to era-defining fashion choices, the Grammy winner has never been one to shy away from a look that gets people talking.
Doja’s birthday celebration also brought together a few familiar faces who were in on the fun—including fellow rapper Doechii, who seemed to channel Azuki’s color palette, Latto, who was all smiles in espresso brown and Barbie pink, and actress Shay Mitchell, who had some of the plush characters in tow, making it a cute star-studded affair.
Earlier this year, Doja told Vogue, “I think that one of my strong suits is world-building, and I do that really, really fast.” It turns out that skill extends beyond the music.
