By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Belize Home Movers Group says it has serious concerns about the circumstances of Saturday night’s crash on the George Price Highway that claimed the life of Police Sergeant Jovanni Ponce.
Sgt. Ponce, 50, died after his SUV collided with a house being transported on a flatbed truck between Miles 42 and 43 in Cotton Tree Village.
In a statement on Sunday, the group said it was devastated by the tragedy and extended condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
The group said its members recognize the added risks of moving houses on weekend nights and have consistently tried to avoid moves on Saturdays and Sundays. It said it is deeply disappointed that a house was being moved on a Saturday night.
It also pointed to what it called apparent shortcomings in the safety lighting on the house involved.
“Public safety must always take precedence,” the group said. “These precautions exist for one reason: to protect human life.”
