KNUST Reopening Dates Explained: Lectures Start 19 October

EDUCATION · GHANA

The KNUST reopening dates are set, and lectures at the Kumasi university in Ghana begin on Monday 19 October. Freshers report on Thursday 15 October and continuing students on Saturday 17 October, under a university notice dated Wednesday 14 October.

The timetable follows a government order that all public universities reopen despite a strike by administrative staff. For US exchange students and partner universities, it means the academic year can finally begin.

How the KNUST Reopening Dates Were Set

KNUST, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, is a public university in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region. It is named after Kwame Nkrumah, who led Ghana to independence and became its first president.

The university issued its notice after an emergency meeting of its Executive Committee on Wednesday 14 October. A deputy registrar for general administration signed it on behalf of the Registrar, Myjoyonline, the news site of Ghana’s Multimedia Group, reported.

The notice set three dates: freshers on Thursday 15 October, continuing students on Saturday 17 October and lectures on Monday 19 October. It asked students, parents, guardians and other stakeholders to take note of the revised arrangements.

Myjoyonline noted that the notice itself gave no reason for the revision. Citi Newsroom, another Ghanaian outlet, linked the new dates to a directive from GTEC issued a day earlier.

Why the Dates Shifted

KNUST had planned to reopen on Tuesday 13 October, according to 3News, the news site of a Ghanaian broadcaster. It then postponed the reopening indefinitely because of a strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).

GAUA is an association of university administrators, and a second group, TUSAAG, represents senior administrators at technical universities. Both groups are on industrial action, and GTEC has acknowledged the administrative challenges this has caused.

On Tuesday 13 October, GTEC wrote to the vice-chancellors of all public universities, relaying a directive from the Minister for Education. GTEC is the state body that regulates tertiary education in Ghana, and its letter made the reopening mandatory.

What the Government Ordered

Under the directive, every public university must reopen no later than Friday 16 October, regardless of any earlier decision to postpone. Lectures must begin without fail on Monday 19 October, which matches the KNUST timetable exactly.

Halls of residence, libraries and registration desks must be staffed and running by Thursday 15 October. That is the same day KNUST freshers are due on campus.

GAUA members were asked to resume their duties while good-faith negotiations with the government continue. GTEC said the education and finance ministries and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission had begun talks with GAUA leaders.

The ministry argued that an indefinite suspension of academic activities harms students’ progression and the running of institutions. It also cited national tertiary education delivery and international academic partnerships, which is where foreign students and universities come in.

What It Means for US Readers

US students on exchange programmes in Ghana, and American families of Ghanaian students, now have firm dates for the start of term. Anyone due to travel to Kumasi should plan to arrive by the reporting date that applies to them.

US universities with research or exchange links to Ghanaian public universities face less uncertainty about the semester calendar. The risk is that the strike is not settled, so some services may run slowly in the first weeks.

For investors and travellers, the episode shows that public sector labour disputes in Ghana can shift schedules at short notice. The government’s quick intervention suggests it wants campuses open, which is a stabilising signal for the academic year.

What Is Not Known

It is not known whether GAUA and TUSAAG will call off their industrial action before lectures begin on Monday 19 October. Neither the GTEC letter nor the KNUST notice, as reported, includes a response from the associations.

The details of GAUA’s grievances were not set out in the GTEC letter as reported, beyond a reference to outstanding issues. It is also unclear whether every public university will meet the Friday 16 October deadline.

The KNUST notice did not explain why continuing students report on Saturday 17 October rather than earlier in the week. Students should watch official university channels for any further change before Monday.
