Razorback Report Card: Victory over Vanderbilt

The Razorbacks ended their SEC losing streak in Nashville. Their postgame report card reveals why this breakthrough was more than a favorable final score. Arkansas finally turned the assignment in with a win attached.

The Razorbacks beat Vanderbilt 31-21, snapped their 14-game SEC losing streak, and gave Ryan Silverfield his first conference victory at Arkansas. After weeks of discussing improvement without the result to support it, the Razorbacks left Nashville with something nobody had to explain away.

The victory moved Arkansas to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play. It also gave us a chance to revisit the five questions fromthe pregame report card. Those standards matter. Winning should not automatically turn every category into an A. But Arkansas did several things Saturday that had been missing when previous opportunities slipped away.

The grades below reflect the verified production and decisive sequences available after the game. Where final statistical totals remain unconfirmed, the original numerical benchmark remains open rather than receiving an assumed passing mark.

Arkansas entered with a C and a specific assignment: hold Vanderbilt below 125 rushing yards and 4.0 yards per carry while preventing a rushing gain of at least 20 yards. Those requirements cannot be graded honestly without the final rushing breakdown.

There were useful defensive moments. Early in the third quarter, Arkansas stopped Jamezell Lassiter for a two-yard loss, helping put Vanderbilt behind schedule. Miguel Mitchell followed with a sack, and the possession ended in a punt.

But the Razorbacks also allowed Vanderbilt to answer their first second-half touchdown quickly. The Commodores moved downfield through the passing game before Makhilyn Young finished the possession with a three-yard touchdown run.

That sequence reminds us that defensive categories connect. Stopping routine carries matters, but it isn’t enough if the opponent finds another easy route downfield. Arkansas deserves credit for the stops it produced. The original rushing benchmarks still require the final numbers before we can responsibly assign a letter grade.

The pregame grade was C-plus. Arkansas needed to hold Curtis below 225 passing yards, force a turnover, and record at least three sacks. The final passing and sack totals remain necessary to complete that checklist, but the defense’s impact was unmistakable.

Joker Johnson intercepted Curtis in the second quarter and returned it 25 yards for Arkansas’ first touchdown. That was more than a change of possession. It put points directly on the board for a team that needed help finding its footing.

Mitchell later intercepted an attempted flip from Curtis, allowing Arkansas to build its final scoring possession. He also recorded the seven-yard sack that helped end Vanderbilt’s opening possession of the third quarter.

The deduction comes from the explosive completions Arkansas still allowed. Curtis found Maurice Veney for 45 yards and Junior Sherrill for 19 during Vanderbilt’s third-quarter touchdown drive. The Razorbacks affected him enough to help win, but they didn’t consistently keep him from answering. The B-plus reflects those consequential defensive plays, not a declaration that every numerical benchmark was met.

Arkansas brought a C-plus into the game and needed at least 140 rushing yards, a 4.0-yard average, and two conversions on third- or fourth-and-short. The Razorbacks delivered a season-high 187 rushing yards and repeatedly used the ground game to keep possessions alive.

Jackson contributed 58 yards, Braylen Russell added 51, and Cam Settles finished with 45. That distribution mattered. Arkansas didn’t need one back to carry the entire offense, and its quarterback gave Vanderbilt another problem to defend.

Russell converted fourth-and-inches in the second quarter and later moved the chains on third-and-short. Settles converted third-and-1 before halftime, and Russell added another third-and-1 conversion in the fourth quarter.

The rushing attack finished possessions, too. Settles scored twice, including the three-yard touchdown that put Arkansas ahead 28-21. Jackson supplied an eight-yard touchdown run earlier in the third quarter. The final team carry count is needed to confirm the exact efficiency benchmark. The yardage, conversions, and scoring production nevertheless established a substantial step forward.

Jackson entered this assignment with a C-minus. The passing standards called for a completion rate of at least 60%, 200 yards, no turnovers, and two players reaching 40 receiving yards. He completed 21 of 31 passes for 251 yards, clearing the completion and yardage requirements comfortably. More importantly, the passing game helped Arkansas move beyond isolated productive stretches.

Antonio Jordan caught five passes for 74 yards. His 32-yard reception helped set up the touchdown that gave the Razorbacks their final lead. Arkansas needed receiving production beyond its primary option, and Jordan supplied it.

The most important completion came after Mitchell’s late interception. Facing third-and-10, Jackson found Jamari Hawkins for 31 yards. Instead of immediately returning the burden to the defense, the offense extended the possession. The complete receiving distribution and turnover line remain necessary to audit every pregame requirement. But the production and timing of those completions made this a clear improvement.

This category carried the lowest pregame grade, a D-plus, and the greatest importance. Arkansas needed cleaner football and a fourth-quarter possession that either scored or protected the lead.

The Razorbacks supplied the possession. Mitchell created the opening with his interception. Jackson and Hawkins converted the difficult third down. Russell added a first-down run, and Max Gilbert finished the drive with a 39-yard field goal that established the final margin.

That was the breakthrough within the breakthrough. Defense, offense, and special teams contributed to the same late-game result. Arkansas didn’t just survive another opportunity. It used one.

The original ceilings of one turnover and five penalties still require the official final totals. Earlier offensive pass interference and an illegal blindside block also deserve attention. The finish was strong, but it didn’t make the entire performance spotless.

Arkansas earned this grade through more than the scoreboard. The Razorbacks ran for 187 yards, received a more productive passing performance from Jackson, created two consequential interceptions and turned a late defensive opportunity into insurance points.

The pregame assignment was to make the improvements work together. Enough of them finally did. Statistical boxes remain to be verified, and mistakes remain to be corrected. Neither changes the most important result. Arkansas left Nashville with a conference win—and a performance worth building on.
