The government’s fuel subsidy scheme has benefited approximately 9 million people across Pakistan, while 10 million people have registered under the initiative, according to a briefing to the Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum on October 12, 2026. Around 9,700 fuel stations are facilitating consumers under the scheme.
The committee was briefed on the subsidy programme during a meeting chaired by Senator Manzoor Ahmed at Parliament House in Islamabad. Officials also discussed the petroleum pricing mechanism, including daily price calculations, stock availability and the responsibilities of the Petroleum Division, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and oil marketing companies.
The committee chairman raised concerns over limited reductions in petroleum prices despite the arrival of new consignments and the availability of sufficient fuel stocks. Officials explained the process used to determine and revise petroleum prices, noting that prices had previously been reviewed monthly before daily analysis was introduced during the Iran-Israel war.
The meeting also covered employee terminations at Inter Gas System (ISGS) and gas connection delays in Quetta. The committee directed ISGS to submit details of its employee termination criteria and the list of affected workers at its next meeting.
