Any Sifnos travel guide starts with the island’s quiet appeal: whitewashed villages, old stone paths, a living pottery craft and some of the best food in the Cyclades.
Its charms are not loud. However, visitors who know Sifnos well rarely swap it for another Cycladic island, and locals call it the “quiet power” of the Aegean.
Elegance, balance and gentle growth define the place. In addition, respect for the landscape shapes how the island has developed, so travellers who want nightlife and crowds usually look elsewhere.
Apollonia, Kamares and Vathi in a Sifnos travel guide
Apollonia has served as the island’s capital since 1836. It takes its name from Apollo, who was worshipped there as a protector of farmers.
Banks, pharmacies and shops cluster in the hilltop village, while flower-filled courtyards line its lanes. Visitors can also find the church of Panagia Ouranofora, renovated in 1767, and Agios Sostis with its carved wooden screen.
At night, life moves to the Steno, the narrow main street of Apollonia, with its restaurants, old coffee houses, bars and boutiques. During peak season, it is packed.
Ferries dock at Kamares, a port that grew in the 19th century as a loading point for ore. Unlike many Cycladic harbours, Kamares has seen only modest development.
Traces of old kilns survive there, as well as a pier from 1909. Today the bay offers cafes, fish tavernas, rooms to rent and a sandy, family-friendly beach.
On the south-west coast, Vathi wraps around a sheltered bay with shallow water and the small church of the Taxiarchis. Tavernas sit right on the sand, so lunch is never far from the sea.
An island shaped by clay
Sifnian pottery remains the island’s best-known craft. Rich clay deposits still lie under the hills, and potters say the local clay makes their wares unusually durable.
Kostas Depastas, a potter since 1948, works in a seaside workshop at Cherronisos in the north. He recalls a time when the whole island worked as one big pottery.
“Everything you see on the coast today, shops, hotels, rooms, all of them were workshops,” he said, because potters needed to be near the sea to load their wares onto ships.
In Artemonas, the Lembesis family pottery now runs into its fourth generation. Most of its bowls, mugs and plates leave the island, although tourism keeps the decorative work alive.
Look out, in particular, for the flaros, a clay chimney pot that has become a symbol of Sifnian pottery. The island’s craft heritage also earned Sifnos a place in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, which it joined the network in December 2025.
Walking the old stone paths
Hikers can explore more than 350 kilometres of footpaths and stone-paved mule tracks on Sifnos. Many survive because islanders still use them to reach their fields.
Since 2012, the Municipality of Sifnos has marked about 100 kilometres of trails as 10 numbered routes. Even so, some signs need repair, so walkers often carry the detailed 1:20,000 map from Terrain Editions.
Route 5 from Apollonia to Vathi is one of the most rewarding. It runs for 9 kilometres, mostly downhill, through old farmland, and takes close to four hours.
Route 10 instead follows the old mule road from Apollonia down to Kamares over 5.7 kilometres. Meanwhile-free options abound, too: Route 2 links the medieval village of Kastro with the famous Chrysopigi monastery.
Much of western Sifnos also falls within the Natura 2000 network. Specifically, the protected zone runs from Profitis Ilias, the island’s highest peak, to the west coast, and it hosts 39 bird species.

Chickpeas, cheese and a famous chef
Food is a big part of any Sifnos travel guide, because cooking here carries real history. Nikolaos Tselementes, the chef who reshaped Greek home cooking in the 1920s, came from the village of Exampela.
Many families still eat revithada, a slow-baked chickpea stew, on Sundays after church. Taverns in Artemonas also serve mastelo, a local dish of meat baked in a clay pot.

Sweet tooths should visit the Theodorou patisserie in Artemonas, which opened in 1968. Its third generation still makes almond sweets, pastelli and halva pies to the old recipes.

Accommodation suits most budgets, and the right base depends on the trip. Apollonia and Artemonas put visitors close to restaurants, trailheads and the island’s bus links.
By contrast, Kamares offers many rented rooms and small hotels within walking distance of the ferry. Kastro has small hotels and rooms inside a village that dates back to 1635.
Beach lovers often choose Vathi or Platys Gialos, the island’s longest beach. Several boutique hotels and villas have opened in recent seasons, so it pays to book early for summer.
