President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, describing the late elder statesman as an icon of integrity and one of the last great figures in Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s progressive political tradition.
Fasoranti died on Tuesday at the age of 100.
In a statement issued by the State House, Tinubu extended condolences to the Fasoranti family, the people of Akure, Ondo State, the South-West and the Afenifere family.
The President said the late Yoruba leader devoted his life to the pursuit of true federalism, social justice and Nigeria’s unity and progress.
“His life, spanning a century, was a lesson in integrity, discipline, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to the Yoruba people and the unity and progress of Nigeria,” Tinubu said.
He recalled Fasoranti’s contributions as an educationist, principal, Commissioner for Finance in the old Western Region and leader of Afenifere.
Tinubu also commended the late elder statesman for his role in the struggle for democracy, saying he fought for the freedoms Nigerians enjoy today, even at the risk of his life.
The President described Fasoranti’s disciplined lifestyle, strong principles and commitment to noble causes as qualities that distinguished him throughout his life.
He said Nigeria would miss the late leader’s wisdom, moral authority and fatherly counsel, particularly at a time when the country needed his guidance.
Tinubu also recalled visiting Fasoranti at his Akure residence in 2022 to inform him of his decision to contest the presidency.
“I also recall his prayers and counsel when I came to his residence in Akure in 2022 to inform him of my decision to contest the presidency. Pa Fasoranti told me I would be President in his lifetime, and God answered his prayer,” he said.
The President added that he had hoped the elder statesman would live to witness his second term and the anticipated benefits of economic growth and prosperity.
Tinubu, who recalled celebrating Fasoranti’s 100th birthday on May 11, said the late Afenifere leader had left an enduring legacy of honour and service.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased and asked God to comfort his family and all those mourning him.
