The Namakkal Corporation established two mini forests using Miyawaki method with 14,000 saplings in Thummangurichi under the vision ‘Green Namakkal – Clean Namakkal – Prosperous Namakkal’.
The Corporation has established the two mini forests with the objective of improving the urban environment. Through this initiative, a total of 14,000 saplings have been planted to enhance the city’s green cover and promote environmental sustainability. As many as 6,200 saplings have been planted in the first mini forest and 7,800 in the second. Plants have been selected and planted using the Miyawaki method. This approach helps to grow a large number of plants in a limited space and creates an environment resembling a natural forest.
Officials said that under the Miyawaki method, plants are classified into four layers based on their growth height and their role in a natural forest ecosystem. Shrub plants account for 35% of the total plantation as they help cover the soil surface, conserve soil moisture, create habitats for small organisms and provide food and shelter for birds and other wildlife.
Sub-tree species (35%) form the middle-height layer and contribute to the development of dense green cover. These plants provide shelter for birds while enhancing the forest’s biodiversity.
Tree species (20%) forms the main tree layer of the mini forest and provides several environmental benefits, including trapping airborne dust particles, absorbing carbon dioxide, improving air quality, and helping reduce urban heat. Canopy trees (10%) grow tall and develop broad branches and dense foliage, forming a natural canopy. They provide shade, help conserve soil moisture, regulate ground temperatures, and create safe habitats for birds and other organisms, officials added.
Namakkal Corporation Commissioner S. Selva Balaji said that Miyawaki mini forests offer several environmental benefits and contribute significantly to improving urban ecosystems. It plays vital roles, including improving air quality, improving rainwater infiltration and soil conservation. With continuous maintenance and proper care, these mini forests are expected to develop into dense green ecosystems in the coming years and contribute to the long-term environmental improvement of Namakkal city, the Commissioner added.
