What you need to know:
- Mr Kituuma says suspects may sometimes remain in police custody beyond 48 hours because of the complexities involved in investigating serious offences.
- One source of confusion is the assumption that release means investigators have found no evidence against the suspect. In reality, investigators may still be gathering evidence, and the decision to release someone while inquiries continue does not determine the eventual outcome of the case.
When a suspect walks out of a police station after being granted police bond, relatives and members of the public may assume that the case has been settled.
In other instances, the release may trigger accusations that police have compromised an investigation or that the suspect has paid their way out.
However, police bond is a temporary release mechanism that allows a suspect to leave custody while investigations continue. It does not amount to an acquittal, dismissal of the complaint or a declaration of innocence.
