Huawei has given the first detailed look at Xingji, a positioning technology it is debuting on the Mate 90 series and the WATCH GT Runner 2. Li Xiaolong, CTO of Huawei's Consumer Business Group and head of its hardware engineering and product development management department, presented the system at a Huawei device technology briefing on October 12, IT Home reported.
Li said conventional positioning no longer copes with the places people now navigate, from tunnels and elevated roads to underground garages, shopping malls, running tracks and ski slopes. Rather than one breakthrough, Xingji is a set of techniques matched to each of those scenarios.
On elevated roads, where drivers often miss lane changes without precise guidance, Huawei pairs a HiSilicon short-range chip with GNSS carrier phase measurement, which it says improves ranging accuracy more than tenfold and delivers sub-meter accuracy for lane-level navigation. Fusing RTK with AI-based pedestrian dead reckoning gives the Mate 90 series track-lane navigation on sports-ground running tracks.
Tunnels are the harder case because phones there usually rely on inertial sensors alone. Huawei combines AI speed estimation with geomagnetic matching, which it says is not limited by tunnel length or driving time. The company claims Xingji is the only technology in the industry to achieve lane-level positioning inside tunnels.
For runners, a 3D floating antenna design raises GNSS signal strength on the WATCH GT Runner 2 by 5.4 dB over the first-generation model. For skiers, fusing GNSS with a ski-specific dead reckoning model makes tracks five times finer and twice as responsive, with distance accuracy of 98%. Huawei's on-wrist ski maps cover more than 3,000 resorts with run-matching accuracy above 97%.
Underground, 3D road network matching records where a car was parked with floor accuracy above 95% and position error under 10 meters. The Mate 90 series ships Precise Car Finder 2.0, which Huawei says is 50% more accurate than on the Mate 80 and already covers more than 30,000 garages.
Indoors, Huawei is working with partners to bring location services into retail. Xingji now supports 500,000 commercial-district geofences and indoor positioning in 17,000 buildings, while Petal Maps offers store-level navigation in more than 260 malls and expects to add over 200 a month.
