JOHOR BARU: Thirty-six foreign workers were detained at a factory in Pasir Gudang over suspicions they had used fake Malaysian identity cards to work in the country.
The group comprised eight men and 28 women aged between 16 and 45, believed to be from the Philippines and Indonesia.
They were detained during an operation by National Registration Department (NRD) personnel.
Preliminary investigations found that some of the workers had allegedly obtained the identity cards for RM100.
Some reportedly admitted to using fake identity documents bearing other people's details to secure employment.
The NRD will work with the Labour Department to investigate the factory's role and determine whether further action should be taken against the premises, Buletin Utama TV3 reported.
Investigators will also establish how the workers obtained the identity cards, it said.
