Burchell pays tribute to Jamaican music pioneer Derrick Harriott

Opposition Spokesperson on Culture, Creative Industries and Information, Nekeisha Burchell, has expressed sadness at the passing of veteran singer, songwriter, record producer and music entrepreneur Derrick Harriott, describing him as one of the architects of Jamaica’s extraordinary musical legacy. “Derrick Harriott belonged to that remarkable generation of Jamaican musicians who did not simply make music. They helped build an industry, shape a national identity and create a sound that would travel far beyond our shores,” Burchell said. She noted that, emerging from the pioneering Jiving Juniors in the late 1950s, Harriott established himself as one of Jamaica’s most distinctive voices, with enduring recordings including The Loser, Walk the Streets, Solomon and What Can I Do. “I have always found it intriguing how Harriott’s The Loser found new life years later through Freddie McGregor’s The Winner, introducing his music to another generation. For me, that speaks to the timelessness of his work. And I have little doubt that future generations of artistes will continue to discover, reinterpret and draw inspiration from the extraordinary musical legacy he leaves behind,” Burchell reflected. She added that his contribution, however, extended well beyond the microphone. Through his Crystal record label, Harriott helped develop and showcase some of Jamaica’s most celebrated musical talents, including Keith and Tex, The Kingstonians, The Chosen Few and a young Dennis Brown. “His legacy reminds us that behind every great musical movement are not only the voices we hear, but the visionaries who recognise talent, create opportunities and invest in the possibilities of others. Derrick Harriott was one of those visionaries,” Burchell stated. She noted that Harriott’s work as a producer, record label owner and entrepreneur helped lay the foundation for the creative industry that Jamaica celebrates today. “Long before we spoke of the creative economy in policy documents, pioneers like Derrick Harriott were building it with their talent, enterprise and determination. We owe them not only our gratitude, but a commitment to preserving their work, telling their stories and ensuring that future generations understand the foundations on which our music industry stands.” “Jamaica has lost a remarkable cultural pioneer, but the music he made, the artistes he nurtured and the doors he opened will remain part of our national inheritance. His was a life that helped give Jamaica its voice.” Burchell extended sincere condolences to Harriott’s family, friends, colleagues and the wider Jamaican music fraternity.
