Oscar-winning actress Dame Judi Dench has revealed that worsening vision loss has forced her to step away from acting. The 91-year-old star shared the update during an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on October 22. She explained that she can no longer read scripts or recognise faces clearly. Her condition has also made performing in films and theatre increasingly difficult.

During the interview with presenter Emma Barnett, Dench described the impact of her eyesight problems on her career. She said she could no longer perform on stage, act in films or read. The acclaimed actress also explained that she could no longer see her own face clearly. Her comments highlighted how significantly the condition has affected her daily life and professional work.
Dench received an age-related macular degeneration (AMD) diagnosis in 2012. The condition also affected her late mother, Eleanora Olave Dench. AMD damages the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision. As a result, people can struggle with activities such as reading and recognising faces. Dench previously described the diagnosis as a major shock and spoke about the difficulties of depending on others.
Despite these challenges, Dench has resisted suggestions that she should retire. In a previous interview with The Times on October 9, she expressed her desire to remain active. She also shared an aspiration to continue living boldly as she grows older. Her comments reflected her long-standing determination to keep participating in life despite her health difficulties.

She also became widely known for playing M in several James Bond films. Although her worsening eyesight has limited her ability to work, her performances have left a lasting mark on entertainment. Her latest remarks offer a personal account of the challenges she now faces.
