Stephen A. Smith under fire after White House meeting with President Donald Trump

Stephen A. Smith is used to being at the center of sports debates, but his latest controversy has little to do with what happens on the basketball court. The ESPN personality is facing criticism on social media after news emerged that he had dinner with President Donald Trump at the White House, a meeting that has drawn particular attention because of the public feud between the two men earlier this year.

The dinner came to light this week when musician Kid Rock discussed the gathering during an appearance on Fox News. According to Kid Rock, Smith and comedian Bill Maher were among the guests who sat down with Trump to discuss several political and social issues. “Stephen A. Smith was very much engaged and talking about unemployment in Black woman and the funding of HBCUs,” Kid Rock said.

Smith addressed the attention surrounding the dinner on Friday's edition of ESPN's First Take, telling his social media followers that he planned to discuss the meeting on his YouTube program, Straight Shooter.

That announcement did little to quiet his critics. Instead, several fans took to X to question why Smith would meet with a president who had publicly insulted him just months earlier.

Smith has yet to provide his full account of the dinner

The criticism reflects a question surrounding the meeting: why would Smith sit down with someone who had recently targeted him so publicly? For some fans, the dinner appeared difficult to reconcile with their expectations of how the outspoken commentator should respond to a personal insult.

However, the circumstances of the meeting, as described by Kid Rock, also suggest that the conversation extended beyond the personal relationship between Smith and Trump. The reported discussion of unemployment among Black women and funding for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) touched on substantive policy issues.

Smith has yet to provide his full account of the dinner in the material available so far, leaving his planned Straight Shooter appearance as the next opportunity to explain his participation and what he hoped to accomplish.

Stephen A. Smith and Donald Trump's public feud

The backlash is particularly notable because Smith and Trump have already clashed in public. In June, Trump attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals, and Smith subsequently criticized the president during a televised discussion following the end of the New York Knicks' playoff run.

Trump responded on Truth Social with a lengthy personal attack against the ESPN commentator, calling him an “arrogant fool” and a “low IQ individual.” “Stephen A. Smith is an arrogant fool, a low IQ individual. In other words, he's ‘dumb as a rock,’ and totally unqualified to ever think of running for high political office, or even low political office, for that matter,” Trump wrote.

The president also claimed Smith would be overwhelmed in a political debate, comparing the commentator unfavorably with former President Joe Biden. Trump's post turned an exchange involving a prominent sports-media personality into a broader public dispute. Against that backdrop, news of the White House dinner has given critics a fresh reason to question Smith's relationship with the president.

Still, accepting an invitation to meet with a political figure does not necessarily signal agreement with that person's views. Without Smith's fuller explanation, the motivations behind the dinner, and his response to Trump's earlier remarks, remain open to interpretation.
