KUCHING: Some 500 Rukun Tetangga (RT) areas nationwide remain inactive, with Selangor leading the list, followed by Johor.
National unity minister Aaron Ago Dagang said Selangor recorded 174 inactive RTs, followed by Johor with 100, adding that the national unity and integration department needs to draft special guidelines for RT reactivation to address the issue.
"This effort must begin by identifying the root causes of inactivity in each RT, followed by appropriate interventions such as strengthening leadership, remobilising resident participation, and planning activities based on the actual needs of the community," he said at the Sarawak state-level Rukun Tetangga Convention 2026 here today.
On a related matter, he said 579 RTs had been established nationwide from 2024 to September 2026, with Sarawak recording the highest number at 63, followed by Selangor and Terengganu with 62 each.
He said the government allocated RM46 million between 2024 and 2026 to support the implementation of RT sectors, with a focus on community economic activities, including community gardens, food production, handicrafts and local small enterprises.
"The initiative aims to generate supplementary income, ease the burden of the cost of living, strengthen neighbourhood ties, and reinforce social cohesion," he said.
