Microsoft Pulls Out of UK Data Center Deal Over Power Delays
১৯/১০/২০২৬

Microsoft has withdrawn from a major UK data center agreement due to power grid connection delays, highlighting growing infrastructure challenges facing the AI industry.
The construction of data centers, a critical driver of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure expansion, has hit a major obstacle: limited access to electricity. Microsoft's decision to withdraw from a major data center agreement in Loughton, Essex, underscores the growing challenges facing Big Tech's ambitious AI investment plans.
According to reports published by The Telegraph and Financial Times on Oct. 18 (local time), Microsoft has withdrawn from a computing capacity lease agreement with UK cloud company Nscale. Under the agreement, Microsoft was set to lease computing capacity from servers at Nscale's Loughton data center. The primary reason for Microsoft's withdrawal was a delay in connecting the facility to the power grid. UK grid authorities have informed Nscale that electricity may not be available at the site until the 2030s.
The two companies had originally planned to deploy approximately 23,000 of Nvidia's latest GB300 chips at the Loughton campus to establish a 50-megawatt (MW) facility. Expected to become the UK's largest AI supercomputer, the project had been hailed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer as a flagship investment supporting the country's ambition to become a global AI leader. However, the substantial delay in securing electricity has significantly undermined the project's momentum.
Nscale maintains that the termination of the agreement will have a limited impact on the overall project. The company said it remains committed to the Loughton project and the UK market and is exploring alternative energy sources. It also emphasized that its other agreements with Microsoft and its contract with Anthropic remain unaffected. Nevertheless, Microsoft's withdrawal leaves Nscale facing the challenge of securing new tenants for the facility's entire 50 MW capacity.
The development could represent a significant setback for Nscale, which is preparing for a U.S. stock market listing. The company has expanded through a neocloud business model, using borrowed funds to purchase AI chips and leasing computing capacity to AI companies. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang had previously praised Nscale as a company with the potential to become the UK's most valuable startup. However, its infrastructure expansion has fallen considerably behind schedule.
As of August, Nscale reportedly had only 25,000 advanced AI chips in operation, equivalent to just 5% of its original target of 500,000. Development schedules at other locations, including its Norwegian data center, have also been delayed, leaving only a fraction of planned capacity operational. In an industry where long-term contracts with major AI companies are crucial to securing financing, the loss of a major Microsoft agreement is likely to heighten investor concerns.
Persistent delays in connecting facilities to the UK's power grid have emerged as a major bottleneck for AI infrastructure expansion. According to Ofgem, the UK's energy regulator, approximately 315 data centers were awaiting grid connections as of July. Their combined electricity demand stood at 73 gigawatts (GW), far exceeding the UK's peak electricity demand of 45 GW. OpenAI had also suspended its UK AI infrastructure development plans in April.
Investors are increasingly questioning the sustainability of the AI investment boom. Australia's Firmus Technologies withdrew its initial public offering (IPO), citing market conditions, while shares of U.S.-based CoreWeave and Netherlands-based Nebius Group have also fallen sharply in recent trading. As access to reliable electricity becomes just as critical as securing advanced semiconductors, power infrastructure is emerging as a decisive factor in the AI industry's future. The shift is expected to further complicate investment decisions for Big Tech companies and AI infrastructure providers alike.
