Deion Sanders breaks personal rule after emotional scenes inside Colorado locker room

The disappointment inside Colorado Buffaloes' locker room was impossible to ignore after Saturday's defeat to Utah, but Deion Sanders believes the tears shed by his players revealed something more important than another frustrating result.

The Buffaloes had recovered from a disastrous opening half to push the unbeaten Utes to the final seconds, only for a late penalty to deny them a realistic opportunity to force overtime.

The 27-24 defeat left Colorado at 2-4 and marked its fourth loss against an AP Top 15 opponent since Sanders became head coach.

Yet the reaction he witnessed afterward convinced Sanders to deliver a message he ordinarily reserves for victories.

Sanders revealed that he broke his usual postgame routine by publicly praising his players despite another result going against them.

"Great team we played. I did something I never do after a loss...I stood up at the podium in front of those kids and told them I'm really proud of them," Sanders said.

The coach explained that several players struggled to contain their emotions after coming so close to producing a memorable upset.

"It was some tears in there today. And I respect that," Sanders added. "Because that means that they wanted it and they love this game. Plus they love this atmosphere, and love this team."

His reaction reflected the dramatic contrast between Colorado's opening-half struggles and its vastly improved performance after halftime.

The Buffaloes managed just 70 yards of offense before the break while accumulating 82 penalty yards, allowing Utah to establish a commanding 13-0 advantage.

Colorado denied overtime chance

Quarterback Isaac Wilson led Colorado's remarkable recovery against his former team, throwing for 256 yards and two touchdowns despite also recording two interceptions.

The Buffaloes produced 324 of their 394 offensive yards after halftime, eventually closing the deficit to three points with 1:21 remaining.

After Utah recovered an onside kick but failed to run out the clock, Colorado regained possession with one final opportunity to extend the game.

Wilson appeared to create a potential field-goal opportunity when he pitched the ball to Quanell Farrakhan Jr., who advanced to Utah's 38-yard line.

However, a video review resulted in an illegal forward pass penalty, wiping out the gain before Colorado's final Hail Mary attempt was unsuccessful.

"Because they fought, they didn't give up, they had a chance and I just knew if we didn't get a penalty, and that was a great play by Isaac by the way, I just knew we were going to nail the field goal and go into overtime," Sanders said.

Sanders backs Isaac Wilson

Although the defeat extended Colorado's struggles against highly ranked opponents, Sanders remained convinced that his team's response demonstrated meaningful progress.

"Isaac is not gonna give up man. He's not built like that," Sanders said, praising the quarterback's determination despite his mistakes. The kids love him and they believe in him."

Utah improved to 6-0 with the victory, extending its winning streak to 12 games and preserving its unbeaten season.

Colorado now faces another difficult challenge against No.18 Oklahoma State on October 24, offering Sanders an immediate opportunity to turn encouragement into results.

"I'm enthusiastic about us fighting to the end and staying united," the Buffaloes coach concluded.
