Nigeria have won the right to host the 2028 ITTF Africa Championships after beating Tunisia in a vote at the annual general meeting of ITTF Africa in Tangier, Morocco.
The Africa Championships, the continent’s elite table tennis tournament, was fiercely contested by both countries after hosts for other 2027 and 2028 events had been announced. The delegates agreed to a vote to settle the matter, with 31 of them present physically and seven casting votes by proxy.
Of the 38 certified voters, 23 backed Nigeria, while Tunisia received 15.
The President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, Adesoji Tayo, said the confidence shown in Nigeria was overwhelming and promised a world-class event in Lagos.
“We want to thank all the delegates for putting their trust in Nigeria to host a befitting tournament in 2028 as well as the African Para Championships in 2027. As experienced organisers of major table tennis tournaments in the world, we are poised to deliver a seamless event that continues to attract more people to Nigeria.
“The city of Lagos will again witness the best of table tennis, and we assure all our visitors that Nigeria will be the place to be in 2028,” he said.
Nigeria will also host the Para event in 2027. Libya will stage the Cup, Algeria the Championships and Botswana the Youth event that year.
For 2028, Rwanda will host the Youth event and Egypt the Para event, while the host of the Cup is yet to be decided.
