New Delhi: Journalist Richa Parashar has lodged a formal criminal complaint with the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), New Delhi District, seeking the registration of an FIR against Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and several others over an alleged assault during a protest near the Supreme Court premises on October 12.
Parashar alleged that she was manhandled and pushed by Gandhi and his security personnel while covering the protest. The incident reportedly left her injured after she fell on the stairs. The journalist is in the first trimester of her pregnancy and said she was concerned about the possible impact of the fall on her health.
Recounting the incident, Parashar said she had been setting up her microphone when the situation escalated within seconds. She alleged that Gandhi grabbed and pulled her hand, following which his security personnel pushed her amid the crowd.
According to the journalist, she repeatedly appealed to Gandhi and those around him to stop pushing as she attempted to move away from the crowd. However, she claimed that she lost her balance and fell on the stairs, causing her phone to shatter.
Parashar said the microphone attached to her collar continued recording the incident even after her phone fell. She also alleged that when she tried to raise the issue, people accompanying the Congress leader questioned how she had fallen, while party supporters continued chanting slogans in Gandhi's support.
Describing her experience after the fall, the journalist said she was distressed by the absence of anyone offering assistance or checking whether she was injured. She claimed that she was unable to process what had happened and eventually broke down in tears.
Parashar said her pregnancy heightened her concerns, as she had fallen on her stomach and was unsure whether the incident had caused any complications.
Following the incident, she was taken to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, where she underwent an emergency medical examination for her injuries.
