Audiences who grew up during that era fondly recalled his distinctive voice, which became a fixture of Kenyan airwaves.
Three decades at SABC
In June 1995, Kalu relocated to South Africa, where he joined the SABC's Radio External Service. Over the following three decades, he served as a principal announcer and producer, presenting and producing news programmes in both English and Kiswahili.
Beyond his on-air contributions, Kalu earned widespread recognition as a mentor who guided younger journalists entering the newsroom. Colleagues remembered him as generous with his time and committed to nurturing talent within the profession.
The Media Council of Kenya extended its condolences to his family, friends, and the broader media fraternity, joining tributes from those who worked alongside him at both broadcasters.
"The Final Broadcast...we honour a giant of the airwaves," MCK said, adding, "His passing is a profound loss to the media fraternity in Kenya and beyond."
