The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the workplace landscape faster than many small business owners might realize. According to Workday’s October 2026 Global Workforce Report, revealing insights into how AI is influencing jobs, it appears that AI is less about shrinking workforces and more about transforming the roles we already hold.
Key takeaways from the report indicate that 40% of business leaders expect AI to enhance the productivity of current employees rather than reduce staff, while only 28% foresee a decrease in headcount. This shift presents an important opportunity for small business owners to rethink their workforce strategies.
Phil Willburn, vice president at Workday, emphasized the importance of adaptability in skills: “Employees may not be changing jobs, but their jobs are changing around them. Leaders need to be honest about what’s different and give people a way to keep up.”
As AI tools become more integrated into everyday operations, there is a marked change in the skills that are sought after. Basic AI competencies, such as simple prompting, have taken a backseat, decreasing by 25% over the year. In contrast, demand for advanced abilities, including AI tool creation and workflow automation, surged by 51%. This pivot indicates that business owners need to prioritize training and development in these areas.
The challenges faced by employees in evolving their skill sets highlight a significant gap—79% of workers are aware of the skills needed for success, yet only 66% report receiving adequate support from their employers to develop these skills. Small business owners should take heed; investing in employee development can not only foster loyalty but also enhance productivity in a rapidly changing marketplace.
However, not all news is positive. The report also reveals stagnation in traditional methods of career growth within companies. Internal job moves have dropped significantly in 57% of employers, with promotion rates remaining flat. This trend is pushing employees to seek opportunities outside their organizations. Notably, 84% of job seekers utilized AI in their job searches, increasing the competitive landscape. The average number of applicants per job has risen, particularly in sectors like finance and technology, exacerbating the challenge for small businesses aiming to attract qualified talent.
Willburn points out a crucial consideration: “The question isn’t just whether someone has done the exact job before; it’s whether they can learn fast enough to solve the next problem.” This perspective urges small business owners to rethink their recruitment strategies, focusing not just on experience but on potential and adaptability.
Currently, nearly 70% of employees have remained with the same company for two years, a sign that many choose stability over risk amid economic uncertainties. However, this loyalty doesn’t equate to satisfaction. Employees are increasingly reluctant to recommend their employers, indicating that a simple retention strategy may not suffice for long-term success. Small business leaders should recognize that while employees may stay put, their engagement and commitment are vital for productivity and morale.
With AI creating both opportunities and challenges, small business owners have a unique chance to redefine their organizational approaches. Here are a few strategies to consider:
- Invest in Training: Given the shift from basic to advanced AI skills, providing ongoing education and resources for employees can bridge the skills gap and enhance overall efficiency.
- Promote Internal Mobility: Address barriers to internal job moves. Creating clear processes for promotions and lateral transfers can help retain talent and reduce turnover.
- Leverage AI Tools in Recruitment: As job seekers increasingly use AI in their job searches, small businesses should also adopt these technologies to streamline hiring and target the right candidates effectively.
- Foster a Positive Work Culture: With employees less inclined to recommend their employers, focusing on workplace culture and employee satisfaction must be a priority.
The Workday report illustrates a notable transition in the workforce caused by AI advancements. For small businesses, understanding these trends can provide a roadmap to navigate this complex environment. Staying ahead of the curve may very well determine who thrives in this new era of work.
