Real Madrid’s 4-1 Champions League victory over Leipzig was overshadowed by questions surrounding Vinicius Jr. after the Brazilian forward walked off the pitch with his head down following his substitution.
Vinicius struggled to make a decisive impact before Jose Mourinho replaced him with Yan Diomande, whose goal helped inject fresh energy into Real Madrid’s attack.
The Brazilian later posted a reflective message on Instagram just as Real Madrid prepare for their upcoming El Clasico against Barcelona, which he will miss through suspension.
Vinicius struggles as Mourinho turns to Diomande
The Leipzig match offered Vinicius an opportunity to make his mark in the Champions League, particularly with his suspension ruling him out of the domestic Clasico.
However, his performance did not meet expectations, and Mourinho opted to take him off in the 70th minute.
The decision was notable because the Brazilian did not need to be rested ahead of Sunday’s meeting at Camp Nou.
Instead, Mourinho introduced Diomande, who made an immediate impression by scoring a superb goal and giving Madrid’s attack renewed momentum.
Vinicius’s reaction as he left the pitch quickly became one of the most discussed moments of the evening.
His lowered head prompted questions about his mood, although his expression alone does not establish what he was feeling.
Vinicius posts Instagram message after Leipzig game
After the final whistle, Vinicius took to Instagram with a brief message that appeared to reflect a difficult period while leaving room for optimism.
“Living in the moment. Everything passes,” read the post.
The words drew attention because they followed a frustrating performance and a visible reaction to being substituted.
However, Vinicius did not explicitly explain what prompted the message, so it would be premature to treat it as confirmation of a particular problem or dispute within the squad.
Given his reaction, it was argued that the Brazilian might not be performing at his optimal level.
Mourinho was asked about the Brazilian’s apparent sadness after the match but avoided claiming to know what was behind his expression.
“Sad? It’s a ‘feeling’ that only he can express,” said the manager.
Real Madrid’s victory over Leipzig provided a positive result, but Vinicius’s reaction has created a separate talking point.
